This summer's heat wave was hard on wildlife as well as humans! The California Raptor Center admitted approximately 35 new patients over the course of several days in June, a record high for such a short time. Most of these new patients were babies--barn owls, Cooper's hawks, and red-shouldered hawks -- that had bailed out of their nests due to the dangerously hot weather.
Our nursery and rehabilitation cages were near capacity, and we had dozens of hungry mouths to feed. These babies required a lot of food and time to grow before they were ready to be released into the wild. A single young barn owl at the CRC ate about 3 mice a day, and with 15 barn owl babies in care simultaneously, that meant over 300 mice per week while we were caring for them. Your support for the CRC helps provide for the care and feeding of baby raptors such as these.
