APRIL 2019

Slovakia

🇸🇰

We filled our raised beds with three layers

We put empty squeezed bottles on the bottom of each raised bed.

Gravel was put as the second layer

We also separated these two layers with non - woven sheet

We put the third layer - soil, substrate on the top of the raised beds and separated the layers with non - woven sheet.

The raised beds were prepared for sowing and planting

We sow onion seeds into the first raised bed.

We sow carrot seeds into the soil of the second raised bed.

For the third bed we chose lettuce and spinach seeds.

We sow radish seeds and plant kohlrabi and cabbage into the last, fourth raised bed.

We started to prepare also other beds for planting herbs and meadow.
and pick up the weed which spread very quickly everywhere.
pH is one of the most important factors that influence the growing cycle and the future production

We used two methods for measuring pH of the soil

The laboratory system VERNIER

Firstly we prepared filtrate from the soil
after that we used pH sensor which was connected with LabQuest2 and put this sensor into the filtrate
and wrote down into the worksheet our observations

The second method we used was chemical way of measuring pH by using laboratory kit with reagents

We confirmed the pH between 6 - 8 for each sample of the soil

Spain

April has been a short but a thrilling month for the Spanish team due to Easter break.

After having finished March looking for different advices to buy or build our raised beds we decided to build them ourselves!

The main team has involved more teachers from the school and some other students to help us, because building them was a tough work.

Spanish team has finally his four raised beds!

Once they were built we had to varnish them and prepare them to sow with some special fabric for our crops.

Our beds will have a base of branches which will help us to drain the excess of water and will give us the perfect ecological grounding for our crops.
Then we have moved them outside, to the place where our new piece of the school garden is placed.
Coming back to the technological part of our project, our first Go Pro arrived to school and we are very excited to start using it! Next month we’ll begin to obtain some of the first images and videos of our vegetables.

On the other hand students team continued working with Adobe APPS. In this case, as 22nd of April was Earth Day, they prepared a presentation to show to the rest of the school the importance of taking care of our planet and how this day was created.

April was a short month due to the 2-weeks-Easter holidays. As it was still cold the seedbeds were tested with already grown herb plants.

The students planned a wooden tool shed for the school garden and calculated the costs for different materials and sizes.

Besides the work in the garden the project got a politcal dimension. The Erasmus+group motivated other students from our school to join a pupils’ meeting with the mayor of Moers and talk about the Fridays for Future movement and why it is so important.

Students from year 7 started a campaign to help the bees and filled 200 packs with seeds of wild flowers and gave them away in the city centre of Moers. Many people were interested and the students explained why it is important to save the bees and plant flowers.

The school takes part in the “Stadtradeln” competition. It is a nationwide competition where everyone can register and cycle as much as possible for the protection of the climate.

The whole school community is invited to join our school-team “GSG-Fietser”. Last year, 420 students, teachers and parents joined and cycled 35.000 km in 3 weeks. This year we want to reach 500 participants and 50.000 km. we saved 6.5 tons CO2 emissions by using our bikes. This year we try to save 10 tons of CO2 emissions.
