Getting Ready for Football Season By Mackenzie Hudson

"Autumn is here, and football is a sign of what Autumn means."

Freshman get ready, football season is here! Now that it's in full swing, you might be wondering how you can make sure to have a great game season. I've been cheering "purple" and "gold" for as long as I can remember, so here are some things I have learned along the way that guarantee a fun-filled game day.

Schedule

The first thing to do is check the schedule to see times and themes for the 6 home games of the season. This will set you up for success when it comes to planning homework and other social activities around game time. Here is what this season of home games looks like:

  • Saturday, September 11th vs. South Carolina, 12 pm
  • Saturday, September 25th vs. Charleston Southern, 6 pm - Family Weekend, Paint It Gold
  • Saturday, October 2nd vs. Tulane, Time TBA - Homecoming, Paint It Purple
  • Thursday, October 28th vs. USF, 7:30 pm - Paint It Black
  • Saturday, November 6th vs. Temple, Time TBA - Military Appreciation Day
  • Friday, November 26th OR Saturday, November 27th vs. Cincinnati, Time TBA - Senior Day

Tailgating Supplies

The fun on gameday always begins when you start tailgating. Some essential items for tailgating include:

  1. Coolers
  2. Tents
  3. Food
  4. Koozies
  5. Bluetooth Speaker
  6. Comfy chairs
  7. A camera to capture all the memories!

Tailgating is the perfect time to hang out with friends and wind-down from the stress of the previous week. Adding games like corn-hole to your tailgating spot can provide more things for you do while waiting on the game to start. Music is always a plus, too!

Gameday Supplies

The time has come for the Pirates to play – what do you bring into the stadium with you?

  1. A Clear Bag - Each ticketed guest can bring a large clear bag – 12" x 6" x 12" clear bag or a one-gallon Ziploc-style bag - plus a small clutch purse (4.5" x 6.5"). Shop for clear bags online at Amazon or in-stores like UBE or the ECU Student Store.
  2. Essentials - Don’t forget to pack any essential items that you will need throughout the game. For example, I like to make sure I always have chapstick, sunglasses, a form of identification, my No Quarter flag, and cash for concessions.
  3. Tickets - Don’t forget to bring your tickets! If you’re a part of the Student Pirate Club, your tickets will be emailed to you prior to every home game. However, if you are using a physical ticket, don’t forget to pack them with you so you can watch the Pirates play!

Weather Supplies

Weather supplies are always needed in case of adverse weather conditions – the game must go on! Weather items include the following:

  1. Rain: poncho (can be found here), water-resistant rain jacket, towels to wipe down seats/bleachers, an extra pair of clothes
  2. Heat: sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, bug spray
  3. Cold: blankets, warm socks, toboggans, scarf

“Nature gives us Autumn… Autumn gives us Pirate Football.”

I hope after reading this that you feel a little more prepared for Pirate football this Saturday! Be sure to cheer "purple" and "gold" as loud as you can across the field. Fingers crossed that we have a great season of football!
