The Pasifika staff and Widening Participation staff here at this university who care about you have created a program called Pasifika Connections which connects students like you with an academic in your area of study. We would really like you to take advantage of this program because many of us know firsthand that it can be difficult to study at University for the first time and be able to feel confident about what you are studying or feel certain about the future career you are studying towards. We hope making these connections will give you opportunities to affirm your ideas and aspirations.
How does it work?
You tell us what you are studying and what you are interested in, or even if you are not sure. Then we connect you with a mentor who is a trained academic in your area of study to help guide you through University or help you gain more clarity about your study goals.
How do I join the program?
You must be studying at this Uni or plan to study next semester to be able to join. Please complete the form on the following link and submit https://mqedu.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_81baPQxFYiX0tTv . If you don’t click “submit” we will not receive your information and cannot connect you with a mentor.
I am often busy. Does it take much time?
Besides the initial training, which is a couple of hours (with a BBQ), there is only one meeting a month between you and your mentor. You will only meet when it is both convenient for you and your mentor to have a relaxed conversation.
What can my mentor help me with?
Your mentors are there to help you but not to do homework with you. Even though some mentors are super-generous and will look at your assignments, it is not expected of them. Typically, they are there to help guide you which can involve:
• help plan goals and progress at university
• show you areas to work on and improve
• help with time management and dealing with stress
• be a general sounding board for advice
• direct you to the right resources and opportunities
• give tips on communicating with tutors, lecturers and staff
Why would an Academic mentor want to help me?
Academics were once students. Some even faced immense challenges to get to where they are today, they often understand. They are kind people who just want to help and learn from the different perspectives of students like you.
Can I change mentors or leave the program?
Yes. Sometimes the matching isn’t right, and you might want a different mentor. If you have any problems you can speak to one of the Pasifika Connections staff (Matalena, Innez, or Bona) or Widening Participation (John), whoever you are comfortable with. We will treat your information with respect and confidentiality.
Is my information kept confidential?
All mentors must adhere to strict confidentiality rules regarding information about their mentees (you). If you join the program, your information is only known to your mentor and a small number of program staff who need to make sure the program is working as it should and in your best interest.
