Artificial Light BY CHRISTOPHER TILLISCH

What is Artificial Light?

Artificial light in the simplest terms is lighting that involves "man made" light that is not produced by a natural light source. Examples of some artificial light sources include, fluorescent, LED flashlight, and standard light bulbs. Some of the benefits of using artificial lighting is the ability to easily manipulate and adjust the setting of the controlled environment from where the photograph is being taken. One of the major downfalls to using artificial lighting is it can be expensive and does not usually come at a cheap price compared to natural lighting.

What are the Different Lighting Patterns involving Artificial light? (With Examples)

When taking photos involving portraits, light patterns can best be defined as the shadows that come across the subject from different perspectives to create different looking shapes on the surface. This is an important photographic concept when studying and taking good portraits of a subject. Some examples of different lighting patterns include butterfly, loop, and Rembrandt.

Butterfly Lighting:

Can be best described as a shadow that is in the shape of a butterfly and is shaped under the subject's nose with the light source being placed behind the camera.

Loop Light:

Is lighting that is created by using small shadows appearing on the subject's noses and cheeks.

Rembrandt Lighting:

Rembrandt lighting can best be defined in a low level lighting environment where the scene is more dramatic, and there is often a shadow of a triangle present anywhere on the subject.

Split Light:

A photo with split light will equally split the light on the subject by creating a more dynamic approach with the light source expressing a 90 degree separation of dark and light sections on the subject.

Backlighting:

Backlight used with artificial lighting is the light that is behind the subject of focus, and is very similar to the same concept in natural light; the only major difference is the type of light source being either natural or artificial lighting.

My Personal Experience:

For this assignment, I used my brother Sean yet again for this artificial lighting project. When photographing the following ten photos, I found it the difficult to direct and experiment with the lighting beaming down on my subject and trying to get my brother to stand or look in a certain direction. Overall, I enjoyed working with my brother to produce these shots. Below is a link to some of the unedited photos that I took before editing.
