Monday, July 26

Dear University community,

Our Dusty Camp last week saw 200 future Dustdevils join us on campus. It’s wonderful to see students on campus and enjoying their experience at Dusty Camp. Our next Dusty Camp is this Thursday and Friday.

  • Also, last week, we were honored to welcome back to campus Consul General of México in Laredo Juan Carlos Mendoza Sánchez. He represents the IME-BECAS program, which provides scholarship assistance to Mexican nationals attending TAMIU. As an international university, having international students on our campus is part of our DNA. We’re honored to be able to help support all our international students as they complete their degree journey here.
  • Are you curious about what’s going on here at TAMIU? How about a chance to see all the news and events and special initiatives in one place? That’s why last week we launched the TAMIU News Hub, one of several outreach projects. Check it out, bookmark and return.
  • You’ll also find new, dedicated web hubs exploring Registration for undergraduates and graduates, TAMIU Books IncludED (yes, the FREE Books program here for students) and the Be A Champ Program (where YOU could become the recipient of FREE tuition).
  • Know any students still unsure about where they will be this Fall? Please point them to Future Dustdevils.
  • COVID-19 Vaccinations are still available on campus every Wednesday and Thursday through our partnership with the National Guard. They’re free of charge and open to all. Additional vaccination dates and more on free COVID-19 Testing are located here.
  • Have you heard about OER? That stands for Open Education Resources and our Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library is a strong advocate for this growing way to reduce cost barriers for students. Learn more about what the Killam Library is doing to support OER on campus.
  • Employees: Open Enrollment continues through July 31 for all Benefits Eligible Employees and Retirees.
  • Registration for Fall is on. It’s going to be a full and vibrant, on-campus experience. We can’t wait to welcome everybody back.

Have a great week and Go Dustdevils!

TAMIU Launches Web Hubs Focused on Helping Students

As TAMIU gears up for its return to a full and vibrant on-campus Fall experience, it has launched a helpful suite of dedicated web hubs and redesigned its main web experience.
Here's a look at our newly redesigned News Hub.

TAMIU Names Dr. Daniel Covarrubias as its New Texas Center Director

A lifelong passion for data and a commitment to its utilization in innovation strategies that can foster economic and enterprise development will guide Dr. Daniel Covarrubias, the newly named A. R. Sanchez, Jr. School of Business’ Texas Center for Economic and Enterprise Development director.
Dr. Daniel Covarrubias

“I look forward to leading the Center's activities and data research and acting as an integrating agent for the region's academic, public, and private actors in areas related to economic development and competitiveness. Our aim for the Center will be to provide research services to regional economic actors, and to transfer knowledge generated through research to society, contributing to the betterment of economic development here and beyond.”

Killam Library Takes the Lead on OER for Campus

The Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library is taking on a new role -- as a champion of Open Educational Resources. In addition to an accessible and dedicated OER website to highlight OER activities on campus and how faculty can collaborate with the Library and integrate OER into their courses, the Library has developed additional tools, including an informative video series.
Ben Rawlins

“Faculty have been using OER from OpenStax at TAMIU for at least the past three years. Some of what we have focused on over the last year is gathering data about OER adoptions; meeting with faculty, both individually and departmentally, to discuss the benefits of OER; looking for, applying to, and collaborating with grant opportunities to provide funding for the adoption, adaptation, and creation of new and existing OER, and developing an OER website. We realize there is a gap in awareness and we’re committed to addressing that.”

- Ben Rawlins, Killam Library director
