Julianne Puente Introduces the Academy Logo

Head of School Julianne Puente and Associate Head of School Stephanie Lipkowitz at the entrance to their new offices

The Academy name has a strong and long-standing reputation in our community.

Last summer, our leadership team undertook the process of identifying a logo that would define our unique community. Throughout the process, it came up again and again that Academy is Albuquerque. From our deep roots dating to 1955 to decades of graduates and alumni families living and working locally, to our current students from every zip code, the Academy is part of the fabric of Albuquerque and New Mexico, like the balloon fiesta and green chile. We take our responsibility to this city seriously and understand the importance of honoring our sense of place.

To that end, I am pleased to share with you a first look at Albuquerque Academy’s logo! It’s made up of two pieces -- a nameplate that is very similar to what we’d been using and a mark (or graphic) that is brand-new to our school. The new mark -- an A -- represents our commitment to bold education in New Mexico. The design echoes the Southwest and is reminiscent of traditional artwork, sunsets, and mountain ranges, reflecting the unique beauty of our home. The open spaces honor those who have yet to join our community, the impact they will have on our community, and the new chapters they’ll add to the Academy story.

You can expect to see the new logo as we gradually replace our old nameplate across campus and infuse the new mark in our communications. Fear not…. The Charger mascot will not go away, so keep wearing your Charger gear with pride!

2021 Hall of Famers Inducted; Call for 2022 Nominations

At Homecoming on September 25, we introduced the first class of Albuquerque Academy's new Athletics Hall of Fame: Notah Begay III '90, Mike Brown, Ellen Hart '76, Joe Armijo, and Micaela Esquivel '02 were celebrated at halftime. If you're on campus, stop by the Path-side entrance of the East Campus Gym to check out the new Hall of Fame display and touchscreen. Or click here to view the touchscreen content, which includes information about our Hall of Famers and honors Charger student-athletes. (Help us improve our content; send additions/corrections to alumni@aa.edu.)

Nominations for the 2022 Hall of Fame are open now! Click here to nominate an athlete, coach, or supporter who made significant contributions to the Charger tradition of excellence.

13 Students Named National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists

The National Merit® Scholarship Corporation has announced that 13 of the Albuquerque Academy seniors who competed in the National Merit Scholarship Program last school year have been named semifinalists in the 2022 National Merit Scholarship Program.

Juniors entered the 2022 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2020 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®), which serves as an initial screen of program participants. The approximately 16,000 semifinalists across the country, representing fewer than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, include the highest-scoring entrants in each state.

Next spring these students will have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $30 million.

Congratulations to all of the semifinalists across New Mexico on being honored for their hard work and dedication. The 2022 semifinalists from Albuquerque Academy are:

  • Christopher Aubin
  • Portia Bryce
  • Timothy Bueno
  • Amanda Carey
  • Quinn Ennis
  • David Fu
  • Devan Johnson
  • Ev McIndoo
  • Nicholas Mohoric
  • Reeya Patel
  • Sara Perez
  • Daniel Richards

Out of the Darkness Walk

The Academy hosted an Out of the Darkness community walk, a core activity organized by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, on October 3. The purpose of these walks is to give people the courage to open up about their own connections to the cause and a platform to create a culture that is smarter about mental health. Hundreds of friends, family members, neighbors, and co-workers walked side by side, supporting one another in memory of those we’ve lost and raising more than $7,500 for the organization.

Academy Business Directory

Help us support the businesses in our Academy community! We’ve launched a new business directory on our website that provides more information and features. Check it out now and any time you need recommendations for goods or services.

Submit a listing for your business. Everyone in our community is invited to provide information about their business. If you were part of our previous listing, please check our new directory to see if you need to resubmit your business’s information. The new directory allows you to provide more details as well as a logo. Our old listings had included COVID-specific information that may no longer be relevant, so we invite you to start fresh here.

Admission Open House October 24

Do you know someone who’s curious about the Academy? Albuquerque Academy students are defined by their curiosity. They are eager to learn. They question, engage, and challenge. They lead, solve, and invent, and they have endless opportunities to explore. Help us spread the word to families with curious students! Applications for Fall 2022 are available here, and our 2021 Open House is Sunday, October 24. PRE-REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED; reserve a time slot here.

DOT Garden Welcomes New Residents

The Academy welcomed chickens to the DOT Garden to support its practice of and teachings about regenerative agriculture and the relationships between healthy soil biology, healthy plants and people, and climate change solutions.

The hens, our newest residents, are housed in a “chicken tractor,” a moveable coop that allows us to move them around the garden to where they are needed. They will do what chickens do – peck at, scratch at, and grind up crop residues, weeds, weed seeds, invertebrates, leaves, and other organic matter. In effect, they will process these materials and make nutrients more readily available to the soil life, which in turn will feed our plants, sequester carbon, and hold more water in the soil.
