West Houston Institute's IDEAS Academy
The West Houston Institute (WHI) is the innovation hub for Houston Community College with a mission to "reimagine and reinvent higher education.”
WHI's IDEAS Academy provides co-curricular programs that introduce students to innovation, design, and entrepreneurship as part of their educational experience.
This Fall 2020, we invite all current students to participate in our annual student challenge, “Project Homeworld.”
2020-21 Student Challenge
"Homeworld" is the term used in science fiction to refer to the planet where a species originates. Although humans may look to the stars, our home will always be here on Earth. It is up to us to create the future we want for our planet.
Past IDEAS challenges were focused on single issues–food security, civic engagement, plastic waste. This year is different. The global pandemic has exposed and amplified the many problems that still need to be addressed.
So this year, we ask:
Think Global, Act Local
In 2015, world leaders identified 17 goals for sustainable development to be achieved by 2030. Called the Global Goals, they represent all facets of our diverse and interconnected existence.
To meet them, we will need to connect the best thinking across all our industries and fields. We will need to utilize cutting edge technologies to empower and amplify our human imagination.
But most of all, we will need to find leaders with creative ways to address the goals in their own communities – with inspirational ideas that make life worth living and can be sustained into the future.
Student Invitation
Project HOMEWORLD invites all students to answerthis year’s challenge with creative ideas to address community problems connected with the Global Goals. Projects can be submitted in the following categories:
- New Products & Services
- Civic Engagement Campaigns
- Art & Cultural Works
- Data, Policy & Research
Students whose project proposals are selected will receive a $500 scholarship in Spring and support to complete the first phase of their project by Summer 2021.
