CAMP COONAWARRA I had the privilege of attending the Grade 6 camp at Coonawarra for the first half of the week. The camp is located in a bush setting on the Iguana Creek in beautiful East Gippsland, Victoria – Bairnsdale to be precise. Our students have experienced the flying foxes over the lake, a giant swing, horse riding, canoeing, wall climbing, raft making and more. Grateful thanks to all staff and volunteers for ensuring the success of the camp, and from my early week experience, congratulations to all students for their exemplary behaviour, and willingness to give all activities a red hot go!! I don’t wish to steal Gill’s thunder, as she is attending Anglesea this week with the Grade 4 students, but I am sure there is commentary from her later in this newsletter!!
NATIONAL YOUNG LEADERS’ DAY I am looking forward to attending the National Young Leaders Day at the Melbourne Convention Centre on Monday, May 24, along with 32 of our Grade 6 school leaders and Mrs Jane McLeod, our Leading Teacher and Grade 6M teacher. The guest speakers on the day include Jordan Lewis (ex Hawthorn AFL player), Jimmy Rees (long time host of the popular ABC Kids program ‘Giggle and Hoot’), Lachie Smart (the youngest pilot to fly solo around the world), Josh Pyke (Aria Award winning musician and author) and Michelle Young (Deputy Commissioner Fire Safety). We will ask the students to write in next week’s newsletter about the leadership story that inspired them most and why.
DISTRICT CROSS COUNTRY I also hope to swing by Banyule Flats on Wednesday May 26 to help cheer on our Grade 3 to 6 students who have qualified to represent themselves and our school at the District Cross country. I wish all of our students the very best of luck for a good performance.
SOLAR PANELS Next week sees the installation of 121 solar panels on the roof of our gymnasium, with the promise of long term financial savings as well as environmental gains! As mentioned previously, we were successful in an application to join the ‘Greener Government School Buildings’ program some time back and the successful tendering company, Solgen Energy Group, will be doing the ‘fit-out’ all through next week.
Open Day The school will be ‘open’ all day on Tuesday, May 25 for prospective families to tour our school with tours on the half hour. It will also be open on Saturday morning, May 29 (coinciding with our working bee) in order to host any prospective families who couldn’t make the Tuesday. It is timely then to remind our current families that if you have a sibling commencing Foundation in 2022 that we are very happy to process the enrolment sooner rather than later.
That’s it from me this week.
Kind regards,
Bill Kersing
Principal

Greetings from Anglesea It’s great to report that everyone is travelling well and the students are definitely having a fun time. We arrived to a beautiful sunny afternoon on Wednesday and got straight into the activities - canoeing, hut building, the giant swing, archery, orienteering, the Park Search and the Indigenous Trail Walk.
The cabins are warm, the food is yummy and the students are participating enthusiastically in all the activities. And some are even sleeping at night!
We look forward to seeing you on Friday afternoon.

- people deal with challenges and conflict in different ways
The Year 2 Action Team have been out in the playground recently taking on the role of ‘Playground Detectives’. They have been very busy recording what they have seen, making connection to our School Values of Responsibility, Resilience, Respect and Kindness.
The Action Team used tally marks to record this out in the yard and then compiled their findings in a letter to Mrs Nicholls. This letter included what we are seeing going well in the yard and also things to continue to work on.
Mrs Nicholls came to the Year 2 Action Team Meeting and was presented with our findings. Some of these are shown below.
Let’s keep upholding the School Values!
