Monday, Aug. 30

Dear University community,

Last Friday, we closed out our Fall Semester Welcome Week with a real treat that filled the sky with fireworks. Synchronized to music, including our alma mater, it was truly a special and historic moment. My thanks to the TAMIU Alumni Association and the Office for Student Success for making this memorable night happen.

  • Welcome Week offered numerous opportunities to engage in the life of the University and I was happy to see so many students exploring life here at TAMIU. Our thanks to the Office of Student Orientation, Leadership and Engagement (SOLE) for their enthusiastic leadership.
  • Last week, we also welcomed 12 new local agencies providing students with valuable service opportunities through our program, Partnership TAMIU: An Alliance for Good. This is an extraordinary and mutually beneficial program that makes a real difference.
  • We know of one place on campus that’s always on the grow…TAMIU’s Community Garden. Our pumpkin patch is on its way and seeds are germinating all over. If you’d like to help out, consider joining other volunteers every Wednesday at 6 p.m. Here’s the Garden Schedule.
  • Ready to “ACE” your courses this semester? Check out the expanded services at the Academic Center for Excellence (ACE) including tutoring 7 days a week at go.tamiu.edu/ace.
  • Our Student Government Association and Faculty Senate helped create this video encouraging the use of face coverings on campus. While you’re at it, please visit our COVID-19 Response Center and our Fall Together@TAMIU Plan for faculty, staff, and students for more on the University’s continued COVID-19 response.
  • Students: Remember you have until Sept. 8 to apply for TAMIU CARES. There are over $7 million reasons in student emergency grant assistance to do so.
  • Don’t forget: COVID-19 Vaccinations continue to be available on campus. Our National Guard partners are making vaccinations available every Wednesday throughout September from 8 a.m. – 6 p.m. in the Student Center Rotunda. Moderna and Pfizer vaccines are available for anyone 12 years old or older. Third doses are also available for those eligible. More info here.
  • Every thought about spinning a different wheel and trying your hand at Ceramics? How about learning a new language – American Sign Language. Or maybe you’d just like to explore an intensive drawing class? These are all options available through TAMIU Continuing Education courses. Find out how.
  • BTW, if you’d like to be eligible for some great prizes, including free tuition, consider joining our Be A Champ, Get the Shot campaign.
  • Employees, check out Tuesday's The TAMIU Insider employee digital newsletter for this and more on Flu Vaccine Clinic here Thursday, Sept. 2.

Have a great week… and Go Dustdevils!

- Pablo Arenaz, Ph.D., President

TAMIU Counseling Expands Services to Students Dealing with COVID-19 Stress

Expanded services include both in-person and virtual counseling sessions, a 24/7 crisis line, additional training, and a self-help platform.

“As a currently registered TAMIU student, students have access to short-term counseling services at no cost that can truly help. The service is confidential and information cannot be shared except for an emergency situation. If you are having difficulty, it is always best to schedule a consultation appointment to help you learn your options. If students feel counseling services are not something they want to pursue at the moment, we encourage them to register for TAO which teaches skills to cope with difficulty…also free of charge. A good first step is simply to visit our website,"

- Rosabel Ramos, associate director of TAMIU’s Student Counseling Services.
