We kicked off homeschool by looking to Costa Rica for new adventures in edible education - and, wow, does it deliver. We are yet to make it out of our own yard!
An afternoon under the water apple tree.
Syzygium malaccense. E.P. uses driftwood he salvaged from the beach to knock a few free. They have delicate flesh that is easily broken so we opt for Momma-on-tip-toes to finish the afternoon harvest. The tree promises a winter full of fruit.
As the name implies, they are...well...watery! As you first bite into the flesh it is floral - "It tastes like perfume!" It is mild enough, however, to not tire of and E.P. eats more than one.
With the best intentions of stewing with ginger and brown sugar we end up enjoying our fruit fresh. We will have to wait for the next harvest.
Chaya (top) must be cooked. Katuk (bottom) can be eaten raw. So far, we're fans of Katuk!
