COURSE DESCRIPTION: Creativity & Business Innovation is a course that focuses on helping students develop a broad understanding of various types of technologies and how to apply entrepreneurial thinking and design processes to create or improve upon solutions to problems they identify through discovery and research.
EXPECTATIONS
  • YULA’s third pillar is Character Development. All students are expected to behave like a mensch.
  • Communication is key. This course has a high level of independence to it. Unless you reach out to me to ask for support or clarification, I assume that you understand the assignment guidelines and expectations.
  • Due dates exist for a reason. I am willing to be flexible on due dates if it means that you are willing to put extra work into improve your assignments or go above and beyond expectations. Failure to meet deadlines due to carelessness or lack of organization are not acceptable reasons for late work and missed deadlines.
  • Perfect is the enemy of done. This class is the anti-perfection. This doesn’t mean to turn in bad work, it means to risk doing something incredible even if you fall short.
  • Ask for help. No one can do it on their own. Asking for help means is a core of innovation. It promotes collaboration and allows us to learn along the way.

Course Mission:

For students to develop the ability to identify and create solutions that address important challenges through the lens of entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial thinking.

OBJECTIVES: As a result of this course, you will be able to:

  • Understand and experiment using the process of entrepreneurship.
  • Familiarize yourself with various design approaches, their role, and how to put them into practice.
  • Develop a deliberate design process, and learn how to apply it of to your work.
  • Learn digital tools and skills to incorporate design into their instruction.
  • Identify your strengths, weaknesses, and passions through a personal development plan.
  • Develop an action plan to support your growth in a skill and/or in completing a project.
  • Create a mission statement and elevator pitch to clearly communicate ideas.
  • Develop a presentation to share your story of growth around your skill or project.
  • Develop a pitch deck to get support and funding for your/a project.
  • Effectively collaborate with peers and engage in supporting peers with constructive criticism.
  • Research and make use of information in the business, technology, and media industries Potentially create the next billion dollar start up.
  • Develop 21st –Century to be productive contributes to society based on the World Economic Forums Emerging Skills for 2022:
  • Analytical thinking and innovation
  • Active learning and learning strategies

  • Learn foundational design skills based on the ISTE Student Standards:
  • Students know and use a deliberate design process for generating ideas, testing theories, creating innovative artifacts or solving authentic problems.
  • Students select and use digital tools to plan and manage a design process that considers design constraints and calculated risks.
  • Students develop, test and refine prototypes as part of a cyclical design process.
  • Students exhibit a tolerance for ambiguity, perseverance and the capacity to work with open-ended problems.

These books are not required but reading at least two of them can give you an outlook and insights into the business world reserved for college graduates looking to launch their career or individuals tryings to find their second career.
