PETE Newsletter Spring 2020 EAST CAROLINA UNIVERSITY

Director's Message

I hope everyone is off to a good start this semester. The physical education majors have been a high demand over the past year, with all five graduates in December employed. A couple of notable graduate accomplishments - Mr. Stephen Allard (BS, '16), 2018 Johnston County Beginning Teacher of the Year and Mrs. Samantha McCumbee (BS, '17), 2019 Sampson County Beginning Teacher of the Year. I challenge every one of you to go above and beyond, so that job opportunities are available to you.
As a physical education major, I want you to look at the following things: (1) What does my social media look like? 2) Do I have any coaching experience? (3) What type of volunteer opportunities have I participated in? and (4) How are my grades? The opportunities are here for you, but you have take that step to be above average. Work hard this semester and know that you have an outstanding support staff in physical education that will guide you to be successful. Are you ready and willing to be the next great Pirate?

RESEARCH WORK IN ACTION

Since February 2019, Dr. Jihoun An has collaborated with Mrs. Bonnie Jackson (ECU Alumna, '02), Health/PE Teacher at South Central High School, to create an inclusive physical education for students with and without disabilities. With the support of ECU Engagement & Outreach Scholars Academy, she and Mrs. Jackson have developed and implemented a modified PE program, which they call "peer mentoring model" in the academic year of 2019-2020 . They are currently exploring the impact of the model on students' learning about disability, social and emotional development and leadership by examining the cultures of youth, physical education, and school. If you are interested in this project and learn more about the modified PE program for students with and without disabilities at South Central, please let Dr. An know about your interest.
