Universal Theme: Sometimes people have a desire to escape from the life they're living.
Examples in "Of Mice and Men"
"O.K. Someday- we're gonna get the jack together and we're gonna have a little house and a couple of acres... we'll have a big vegetable patch and a rabbit hutch and chickens. And when it rains in the winter, we'll just say the hell with goin' to work, and we'll build up a fire in the stove and set around it and listen to the rain comin' down on the roof..." (Steinbeck, 14-15).
Examples in "Tularecito"
"Tularecito stared hard at the ground and drilled his old thoughts with this new information. "Thou hast said they are my people," he exclaimed. "I am not like the others at the school or here. I know that. I have loneliness for my people who live deep in the cool earth. When I pass a squirrel hole, I wish to crawl into it and hide myself. My own people are like me. I must go home to them, Pancho" (Steinbeck, 8).
Examples in "Chrysanthemums"
"You sleep right in the wagon?" Elisa asked. "Right in the wagon, ma'am. Rain or shine I'm dry as a cow in there." "It must be nice," she said. "It must be very nice. I wish women could do such things." "It ain't the right kind of life for a woman." Her upper lip raised a little, showing her teeth. "How do you know? How can you tell?" she said" (Steinbeck, 6).
Applying to the media
In many movies the theme: sometimes people desire an escape from the life they are living, is applied. For example we have the movie Cinderella.
So how would this apply to today's world?
All in all, people today desire an escape from their lives. For example all those starving children around the world. Or all those women in different countries that aren't given rights. Don't you think they wish to leave that horrible life and get a better lifestyle? In today's world we should be aware of what is going on around us because there may be more people that we may think who desire an escape from their life.
