Conrad Weekly Memo March 17, 2021

Principal's Message

We are excited to begin our high school spring athletic competitions next week and invite spectators. We are also excited to announce our plans to offer a comprehensive spring middle school intramural program as well as extracurricular band and choir programming. Here are some details:

High School Athletics

Two spectators per rostered athlete (home and visiting) may attend competitions at Conrad Schools of Science. must adhere to these spectator limitations and spectators must wear a mask properly, social distance, and be free of any COVID-19 symptoms. Spectators will sign in upon arrival and hand sanitizer will be available. Except for Boys’ Lacrosse and Boys’ Volleyball competitions, bleacher seating is not available and spectators are encouraged to bring a chair.

Coaches will provide additional sport specific guidance.

Middle School Intramural Athletics

While Red Clay will not be offering interscholastic athletics this year, Conrad will offer the following intramural sports during the following sessions:

Session 1 (April 12-May 8)

  • Flag Football
  • Cheerleading
  • Girls’ Volleyball
  • Track (Co-Ed)

Session 2 (May 10-June 5)

  • Boys’ Basketball
  • Girls Basketball
  • Boys’ Lacrosse
  • Soccer (Co-Ed)

Additionally, many high school coaches will offer Mini Sport-Specific Camps to middle school students throughout the spring. We will communicate more details on these camps and more specifics on Session 1 and 2 on March 30th.

Band & Choir

Opportunities have also opened for our band and choir students. Questions about these opportunities should be directed to Ms. Huff at Janaen.Huff@redclay.k12.de.us.

SAT and ACT Prep

Sophomores and Juniors are invited to join the University of Delaware for a one-hour free strategy session introducing them to the basics of both exams, guiding them through sample questions and teaching them a few strategies. If students want to prepare even more, UD also offers a series of live, online courses that will help them get ready for the SATs or ACTs. For more information visit the UD website. (they also offer full scholarships for students with demonstrated financial need.)

FAFSA is OPEN! The completion of the FAFSA is required for students to be eligible for state and federal financial aid (scholarships, grants, and loans). Financial aid is distributed on a first-come-first serve basis therefore students should complete this as soon as possible.

Stand By Me

Stand By Me information – We welcome your students and their families to access our helpful and informative financial aid presentations that have been so popular in the past-from home! Families and students can participate in any of the scheduled ZOOM events, regardless of school they attend. Conrad Schools of Science has an On-Site Wellness Center which is staffed with a Family Nurse Practitioner with prescriptive authority, a Registered Dietician, and a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. For more information, contact the Wellness Center at 302-992-5532

Notes for Nursing Home Residents

Thank you to all those who kindly wrote a letter for a nursing home resident! This kind gesture will go a long way in making a positive impact in the community.

Mrs. Tran's Forensic Class

Students in Ms. Tran’s Forensics classes reviewed concepts from the Crime Scene Investigation Unit by playing Blooket’s Tower of Defense. Students answer content questions correctly to earn tokens, which can be used to build towers that defend their kingdom.

Middle School Class Council

“Middle School Student Council is sponsoring two school-wide dress-down days, next Tuesday, the 16th, and Thursday, the 18th. Let’s see just how Green Conrad can be for St. Patrick’s day”

Math Counts!

Yanming (Luca) Huang and Adarsh Ramamurthy are finalists from DE in Math Counts. They will be competing with other 13 students from DE on 3/25. The top 4 out of 15 will be representing DE in the Nationals, all paid trip by the state/organizer to Washington DC. It is sort of Math Olympiad tournament for Middle schoolers.

In the Chapter qualifying round, Luca finished third and Adarsh Finished second. ( Top 25 from DE advanced to next round)

In the State qualifying round Luca finished first and Adarsh finished 3rd. ( Top 15 are qualified to compete in state Finals)

Blue Gold Club

Rock Your Socks Day is Sunday, March 21st – Support World Down Syndrome Day by posting a picture of your craziest socks on social media and tagging @conradbluegold . This day is celebrated in support and awareness for those with Down Syndrome.

World Autism Awareness Day is Friday, April 2nd and we invite you to Light It Up Blue in support of those with autism. Wear blue and post a picture on social media with #LightupwithKindness and tag @Conradbluegold.

National Honor Society

Juniors, be sure to check your redclayschools email! Invitations to apply for high school National Honor Society were emailed to 11th graders with an unweighted GPA of 3.25/4.0 on Saturday, February 27th. Completed NHS applications are due to Mrs. McDonald by Monday, March 22nd.

Above and Beyond Award

Thank you to Nick Oleksy, Nick Barbato, and Ben Williamson for their commitment to the Athletics Program. Nick Oleksy and Ben Williamson took the lead on broadcasting sporting events both at Conrad and away. Their service allowed our community and extended friends and family an opportunity to support student athletes. Nick Barbato took the lead on Sports Photography in both the Fall and Winter seasons, capturing moments on all competitive fields that families will cherish for years to come!
