Marine animals produce a skeleton made up of calcium carbonate or limestone. After a coral dies the only thing that remains is the skeleton. Great Barrier Reef is the largest coral reef in the world.Their are seven species of coral that can form enormous colonies.The red coral located in the Mediterranean sea does not loose its color.Corals can be colorful underwater but same but some species fade when they are out of water. Coral is an important treasure in the water surroundings.

Oceania has 10,000 islands in the pacific.Oceania covers almost about 20 million square miles.The land area of the islands is small it is only 324,000 square miles.The eastern pacific does not have many islands.Oceania is a diverse region. Geographers concider Austrailia to be part of Oceania. An atoll is a circular Oceania system is surrounds a large lagoon.

Their is an old coral reef at the eastern end of the chain.Key Largo is the largest of the keys.Outside of Hawaii is Key West, it spreads of a small island. Key West was incorporated as a city in the 1820´s.Their are sunken pirate ships at the offshore reef.

Coral reefs can also be known as The Rain forests of the Sea. The value of coral reefs was estimated at 30 billion dollars. Many reefs today are a pale shadow of what they once were. Corals are related to anemones and share that same structure. Tentacles have stinging cells called nematocysts. Corals are not the same as anemones in their production of mineral skeletons.

About one-third of all marine fish species live their life in coral reefs. Coral reefs in Florida Keys hold 45 species of stony coral. Corals are related to jellyfish. An individual coral is called a polyp. Thousands of polyps live together and can form a colony. Reefs occur in the shallow waters where the sun shines.

Coral reefs are valuable services to people. Vertebrate animals are critical to coral reef health. Coral reef marine fish are known for their bold. Most atolls are located in the south pacific. Atolls are very rare in the Caribbean sea.

25% marine lives live in the coral reefs. Coral reefs organisms are being used for treatment. Some coral reefs are located in the coast of Norway. Deep underwater reefs are found in the Mediterranean sea. Corals cannot live if water temperature is too high.

Corals are small and they live in one place throughout their adult lives. Many species grow year after year. Their are several different types of corals. The pipe coral is a structure.

Corals that live in shallow waters have another source of food. Coral reefs are found in tropical areas. Coral polys from structural foundation of coral reefs. Priority regions with extensive reefs are the Coral Triangle and Mesoamerican reef.

The Great Barrier Reef is located in Queensland, Austria. The Great Barrier Reef stretches 1,250 miles. Reefs are composed by the remains of a coral. When a coral dies the only thing that remains is the shell and other corals grow on it. Each species occupies a specific niche. Their are more than 1,500 species of saltwater fish. water pollution wrecks havoc on the reefs.
