THE MAKING OF POLYSTYRENE

PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL PROPERTIES

physical properties: Hard, stiff, brittle and transparent

chemical properties: flammable, disposable and synthetic

ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES ASSOCIATED WITH POLYSTYRENE

  • LANDFILLS-many landfills are caused by polystyrene
  • LITTERING- 90% of the marine littering is plastic that includes polystyrene Styrofoam. Styrofoam could be broken down by water and 80% of marine animal life mistakes Styrofoam bits for food.
  • HAZARDS- people could get irritation by only touching Styrofoam.

WHAT IS USED FOR AND WHY WAS IT MADE FOR

USED- Cd cases, disposable razors, packaging, yogurt containers, cups and plates. WHY-protection for cd's, cheaper razors, light packaging, disposable yogurt containers, recyclable cups and plates.

IMPACTED SOCIETY

GOOD- foam recycling have saved schools between 40% on material collection fee's

BAD -landfills and littering around the world mostly on the southeast in of Asia.

FUN FACTS

  • polystyrene is used in construction
  • polystyrene is used to isolate heat and cold
  • polystyrene is made from petroleum which is not eco-friendly
  • polystyrene foam takes more place on littering than paper
  • it is dumped in the environment and its consider littering
