OMAHA ATHLETICS REWIND april 3-9, 2017

HOCKEY

Omaha Athletics announced last Wednesday that Mike Gabinet had been hired as the third hockey head coach in school history. Gabinet, who had served as the associate head coach during the 2016-17 season, is the first former UNO player to coach his alma mater. The native of Edmonton, Alberta played defense for the Mavericks from 2000-04.

BASEBALL

The Omaha baseball team opened its week Wednesday, falling 3-1 to Nebraska at Werner Park. Parker Smejkal was 1-for-4, driving in the Mavericks' only run.

On Friday, Omaha began its weekend series with Western Illinois, falling 14-4 in seven innings. Grant Suponchick was 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI.

Home runs made all the difference on Saturday, as the Mavericks defeated WIU 4-2. Suponchick (1-for-3, one run, one RBI) and Marcus Ethen (1-for-4, one run, two RBI) both homered, and Smejkal was 2-for-4 while scoring twice. Sam Murphy (2-4) earned the win, allowing one run on seven hits and three walks with seven strikeouts. Suponchick also picked up his first save of the year, limiting the Leathernecks to one run on three hits over the final 2.0 innings.

In Sunday's series finale, Omaha rallied with a seven-run sixth inning but fell just short to the Leathernecks, 11-10. Cole Thibodeau was 3-for-4 with three runs scored, and Henry Wittren was 2-for-3 with a run and two RBI off the bench.

SOFTBALL

Omaha softball went 2-1 last weekend, opening with a 9-5 win at South Dakota. Emily Klosterman, Emma Dargy and Hailey Bartz combined for seven hits and seven RBI. Klosterman went 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBI. Dargy was 2-for-3 with three RBI, and Bartz also finished 2-for-3. Abbie Clanton picked up the win in the opener, throwing 5.1 innings, and Laura Roecker picked up her third save of the year by pitching the final 1.2 innings.

In the second game, South Dakota defeated Omaha 5-1. Kaitlynn Hunt was 2-for-3 with a run scored to lead UNO at the plate.

The Mavericks then took the series finale on Sunday, 2-1. Roecker picked up the win, throwing a complete game and limiting the Coyotes to one run on six hits and a walk with three strikeouts. Lia Mancuso went 2-for-4 with a triple and an RBI to pace the Mavericks offensively.

MEN'S GOLF

The Omaha men's golf team finished ninth out of 16 teams at the ASU Red Wolf Intercollegiate hosted by Arkansas State last week. Mitch Ryan led the Mavericks with a 54-hole total of 220 to finish ninth in the field of 85 golfers. Ben Maskus was second on the team and tied for 16th overall with a total of 224.

WOMEN'S TENNIS

The Omaha women's tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision at Western Illinois on Friday. Michelle Lo secured the Mavericks' only point, dropping the first set but rebounding for a 4-6, 6-2, 10-6 victory at No. 1 singles.

On Sunday, Omaha hosted Marquette, falling 6-1. Rylee Tucker rallied for a win at No. 5 singles, 0-6, 6-3, 7-6(4).

MEN'S TENNIS

The Omaha men’s tennis team went 1-1 last weekend, opening with a 5-2 win at IUPUI. The duo of Razvan Grigorescu and Colin Buckley picked up a 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles, while Nathan Reekie and Alex Woodward clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 win at No. 2. In singles play, Woodward earned a dominant victory at No. 6 (6-2, 6-1). Grigorescu and Louis-Jonas Heizlsperger picked up straight set wins at No. 1 and No. 5, respectfully. Reekie completed the win with a split set win at No. 2.

On Sunday, UNO dropped a 4-2 decision at Illinois State. John Ellis and Grigorescu each picked up singles victories for Omaha. Ellis earned a 6-3, 6-3 victory at No. 6, while Grigorescu picked up a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 1.
