about me

My name is Wesley Knight I'm from Pearland Texas. I graduated in 2016 from Pearland High School where I played fullback for the football team for all 4 years. I currently moved to Alvin this past January. I currently work at a Metal shop in Houston called Houston Casing Specialties where I am the shipping and handling Supervisor, we build tools in oil drilling such as centralizers, bow springs, and stop rings. I’m a proud owner of a Jeep Wrangler in which I spend the majority of my paycheck in upgrades. I’m currently seeking to finish my basic core classes at ACC, I’m seeking to transfer to UH to attain my bachelors in mechanical engineering. This is my second semester and it is going very well, more so than my first semester. My first semester was a bit shaky due to having the lingering effects of senioritis. This semester however I am doing very well, my grades are good and I’m actually on top of my class work.

EVALUATION ESSAY ROUGH DRAFT

The 2017 Jeep Wrangler JK from Chrysler, is the newest model of a long military heritage. First designed for World War 2, the Jeep was designed to be centered around durability, off-road capabilities, and being combat ready; Such as replacing brake pads without removing the wheel. Veterans fell in love with the vehicle instantly, after returning home many of these veterans bought one for themselves, thus it was permanently associated with the American nostalgia. The 2017 model has some of these same characteristics such as, a sophisticated suspension, unmatched durability, ease of serviceability, infinite customization possibilities, and a family of fellow Jeep enthusiasts that welcome any newcomer with open arms. But the Jeep Wrangler also lacks in the most obvious of places that come with an off-road vehicle such as, comfort, gas mileage, and engine performance.

One of the strongest points of the Jeep is its durability of every signal part in the vehicle. Jeep owners are notorious for a “drive it till it dies” attitude and for good reason. Built to withstand extreme off-road conditions, it is easily one of the most long lasting vehicles. This reflects in Kelly’s Blue Books “Resale Value reward”, even though it was awarded 4rth overall it has in the past been awarded 1st for several years in a row. But when you do breakdown the ease of serviceability is almost unmatched. For the most part one wrench size is all you would need to do almost any type of work on these Jeeps. It also retains some of its “combat ready” features such as replacing the brake pad without removing the entire wheel, which is achieved by rotating the desired wheel to the opposite direction.

Standard with jeeps is the 3.6 liter, V6 engine, that produces 285-horsepower and a 260-pound torque, that get the jeep moving from 0 to 60 in 7.5 seconds, and a top speed of 85 miles per hour, anything over 75 mph puts a strain on the engine. Which is remarkably fast compared to wranglers in the past who average 10.5 seconds. The lack of speed is due to the fact the engine was designed for reliability over raw speed and horse power. The Wrangler also has a very high rpm rate, to someone who isn’t aware this could be shocking. Cruising at 1.5x1000 rpms it was first designed to assist in “rock crawling” or driving over big bumps, logs, or rocks. 4-wheel drive comes standard with a high and low gear. One of the downfalls of the Wrangler is the gas mileage; going at a solid 18 mpg, in today’s standards this is very low, it’s the equivalent to a diesel truck. This is not even including when you put a lift in or bigger tires.

Jeeps are not well known for their comfort, if you are looking for luxuries ride or features, a jeep is not for you. Depending on a hardtop or soft-top the amount of sound could change, both being loud. The soft-top for obvious reasons is much louder than the hardtop. Holding any type of conversation on the highway is completely out of the equation. But the benefits of having a soft-top is being able to remove the top, any place or anytime. With a little practice you could have the top down in a couple of minutes and it back up in five. The downside of a hardtop being that once taken off you break the seal which can over time be more liable to leakage, but being significantly quieter it is still louder than most other vehicles. Wranglers also have little extra interior options, except power windows and locks, “pleather” fake leather, and cloth seats. The jeep has almost the bare minimum in terms of comfort from no seat warmers or voice control. Then there’s the ride, the downside in having a premium suspension system is that you can almost feel every minute bump in the road. Notorious for their rough rides wranglers are not what some would call a “family car” or “baby car”. The storage for a jeep is also very small or minimum offering only a lockable glove box and a back seat that folds up. Although the four-door model offers a bit more storage in its rear compartment. Forget about leaving any costly valuables in it as well, offering only the lockable glove box; anything too large to fit in it is liable to be stolen, due to its inadequate security system. Which depending on whether you have a soft-top or hardtop can also make a difference, in that a soft-top can just be unzipped and you’re inside the vehicle.

Safety is also bare minimum, the only protective features being a roll cage, seat belts, and airbags. The roll cage being necessary due to jeeps having a high roll over tendency, this is due to its high center gravity and heavy front end. In past years Jeeps, have been notorious for their roll over problem, with the 2017 model this has greatly improved but are still ranked 4rth in US news’s “top five most dangerous cars for teens”. For a parent, a jeep might not be appealing, but with adults who understand there/other vehicles can handle a Jeep more carefully.

The greatest feature of the jeep is its customizability. You can almost completely change your Jeeps style and there’s plenty of options in every part, including interior and exterior. From bumpers, fenders, engine, engine performance, lifts, and wenches, and this isn’t even scratching the surface in the possibilities. With all the customization option an individual’s personality could Cleary come out. And almost no Jeep can be the same as the other one.

The 2017 two door model starts at 23,000 and the best package at 33,000. Four door models or the unlimited starts at 27,000 and up to 47,000. Also, Jeeps hold on to their value very well, Kelly’s Blue Book awarded Jeeps “Best resale value after 100,000 miles” 10 years running. Then on top of that you might be able to make profit with all the customized parts.

With all the different personalities that come with customizing a jeep people have been gathering together to, compare, discus, and drive their jeeps. The “jeep crew” could be from a couple of friends to all the way to hundreds of people. And the jeep community is very welcome from senior jeep enthusiasts to beginner’s. These people from across the country all love their Jeeps and are more than happy to talk for hours about tips, parts, how to properly go off-roading, and just general discussion. One of the most staple jeep traditions is the “Jeep wave”, with all jeep owners it is expected to wave at fellow jeeps. To some the family of fellow Jeep lovers can be one of the most appealing parts that come with a jeep.

Without a doubt the jeep is the best off-road vehicle on the market. But being this means being one of the worst high way vehicles. For the teenager, an adult that is a teenager at heart, or the outdoors men, the 2017 jeep is the perfect fit that encompasses the perfect chassis for your own personality, the reliability to not break down when you go down trails, and a group of friends that you can spend a weekend together doing and enjoying what you all love “jeeping”. If you’re looking for a luxurious, fuel efficient family car, then the wrangler is not definitely not for you, from being ear ringing loud to bare minimum safety features. Overall the 2017 model comes from a long heritage of off-roading, but also does an average job at bringing together both off-road and high way capabilities. Still lacking in some areas, it is a good start to making the perfect all-terrain vehicle.

THE FINAL PRODUCT

The Never-Ending Hole in my Wallet

The 2017 Jeep Wrangler JK from Chrysler, is the newest model of a long military heritage. First designed for World War II, the jeep was designed to be centered around durability, off-road capabilities, and being combat ready; Such as replacing brake pads without removing the wheel. Veterans fell in love with the vehicle instantly, after returning home many of these veterans bought one for themselves. Thus, it was permanently associated with the American nostalgia. The 2017 model has some of these same characteristics such as a sophisticated suspension, unmatched durability, ease of serviceability, infinite customization possibilities, and a family of fellow jeep enthusiasts that welcome any newcomer with open arms. But the jeep Wrangler also lacks in the most obvious of places that come with an off-road driven vehicle, comfort, gas mileage, and engine performance.

One of the strongest points of the jeep is its durability of every signal part in the vehicle. jeep owners are notorious for a “drive it till it dies” attitude and for good reason. Built to withstand extreme off-road conditions, it is easily one of the most long lasting vehicles on the road today. This reflects in Kelly’s Blue Books Resale Value Reward, even though it was awarded fourth overall it has in the past been awarded first for several years in a row. Luckily when you do have an issue the ease of serviceability is almost unmatched. For the most part one wrench size is all you would need to do almost any type of work on jeeps. It also retains some of its “combat ready” features such as replacing the brake pad without removing the entire wheel, which is achieved by rotating the desired wheel to the opposite direction, then simply sliding out the brake pad, inserting the new one the same way.

Standard with jeeps is the three-point-six liter, V6 engine, that produces two-hundred-and-sixty pounds of torque, that accelerate the jeep from zero to sixty in seven-point-five seconds, and a top speed of eighty-five miles per hour; Anything over seventy-five mph puts a strain on the engine; Which is remarkably fast compared to Wranglers in the past who average ten-point-five seconds. The lack of speed is due to the fact the engine was designed for reliability over raw speed and horse power. The Wrangler also has a very high rpm rate (rotations per minute), to someone who isn't aware this could be shocking, most notably to ones driving a standard. Cruising at 1.5x1000 rpms it was first designed to assist in "Rock crawling" or driving over large bumps, logs, and/or rocks; the extra rpm rate gives the jeep more torque or power to move over steep obstacles, large tires take advantage of this by increasing the amount of power per inch in each tire. Four-wheel drive comes standard with both a high and low gear. One of the downfalls of the Wrangler is the gas mileage; going at eighteen mpg, by today's economic and envirmental standards this is low, this is also an exaggerated rate due to real world conditions and amount of customizations made. Most standard jeeps get closer to twelve were as jeeps with lifts, mud tires, bumpers, etc get closer to ten.

Jeeps are not well known for their comfort. If you are looking for luxuries ride or features, a jeep is not for you. Depending on a hardtop or soft-top the amount of sound could change, both being loud. The soft-top for obvious reasons is much louder than the hardtop. With a little practice, you could have the top down in a couple of minutes and it back up in five. Wranglers also have little extra interior options, except power windows and locks, “pleather” (fake leather), and cloth seats. The jeep has almost the bare minimum in terms of comfort from no seat warmers or voice control to minimum storage. From bumpers, fenders, engine, engine performance, lifts, and wenches, and this isn’t even scratching the surface in the possibilities. With all the customization option an individual’s personality could cleary come out. And almost no Jeep can be the same as the other one. With such a variety of jeeps, groups of fellow jeep owners have formed to show off their jeeps, discuss jeeps, and gain inspiration on the next project.

The 2017 two door model starts at twenty-three-thousand and the best package at thirty-three. Four door models or the unlimited starts at twenty-seven-thousand and up to forty-seven. Also, jeeps hold their value incredibly well, Kelley's Blue Book awarded jeeps "Best resale value after one-hundred-thousand miles" ten years running. Then when the owner decides to sell his/her jeep depending on the amount of accessories, one could sell for a profit.

Without a doubt the jeep is the best off-road vehicle on the market. But being this means being one of the worst high way vehicles. For the teenager, an adult that is a teenager at heart, or the outdoors men, the 2017 jeep is the perfect fit that encompasses the perfect chassis for your own personality, the reliability to not break down when you go down trails, the off-road capabilities to take you down such trails, and a group of friends that you can spend a weekend together doing and enjoying the jeep culture. If you’re looking for a luxurious, fuel efficient family car to take your family of five to and from soccer practice, then the Wrangler is definitely not for you, from being ear ringing loud to bare minimum safety features. Overall the 2017 model comes from a long heritage of the American dream, but also does an average job at bringing together both off-road and highway capabilities. Still lacking in some areas, it is a good start to making the perfect all-terrain vehicle.

REFLECTIVE ESSAY

Throughout my academic career, I have written many essays covering a range of topics and forums. I choose the Evaluation essay due to it being our first essay in the semester and from this essay I learned how to create an effective and organized paper. This essay was my foundation while the others are building blocks on top. Throughout this essay, I learned my strengths and faults and fully develop a writing process.

The topic for the Evaluation essay was that to give a review of a product. I choose to write about Jeep Wranglers. Jeeps are very familiar to me, being a jeep owner and enthusiast myself a jeep would be easy to write about, although biased. My essay does have faults, most notably is the way the paper is organized. The paragraph discussing customization could be moved to follow the paragraph discussing prices and packages. The paper also does not meet certain MLA format such as, numbers should be spelled out grammatically, hyperlinks removed from citations, citations in alphabetical order, the entire citation. This essay in particular sound very personal or conversational, this is always an issue for me duo to writing the same as I talk.

I do not have particularly extensive writing process. Depending on the topic, I start by doing the required research, compelling a list of facts or ideas. To start my essay, I write my thesis this will include each body paragraphs topic. I then just add fluff, from the thesis, fact ideas, and statements, I separate each in their respective paragraph, the fluff comes from making my notes and creating a word for word conversation. Which is why my writing sounds conversational, I literally talk about the topics and type as I discuss. In the past I only wrote without planning ahead each paragraph and idea. This arose problems due to me changing my mind half way through the essay, the beginning sounding right sided while the bottom sounding left. The last step in my writing is to reword my introduction, the introduction informs the reader what is to come, the conclusion says what has came. I summarize the information, grabbing major points from the body paragraphs and complicating them in a way that sounds complete, without leaving the reader hanging.

The biggest lesson I have learned in Composition 1 is actual MLA format. In high school MLA format only meant a certain header, double spaced, Times New Roman, and twelve point font; I now understand its much mre than that. I now plan the organization of my essays before writing them, in high school I would only write in the order it came flowing into my head. Also I believe my essays are beginning to sound more intelligent, again before college my essays sounded like the rumbling of a modest high school student, now they’re the rumblings of a college student. My thoughts come out more quickly and it is now easy for me to write five-hundred words, were as before it was the hardest thing to achieve.

My evaluation essay showed me just where I needed to improve, MLA format, organization and my writing process. From these faults, I was able to then learn from, practice, and build upon the issues. With all the essays written this semester, I have grown with practice and improve in the quality of my writing and writing process
