What's Happening This Week in 8th Grade???

English Language Arts

  • Read 180 (Romberg/Durrence): In READ 180, we continue with Workshop 8- “Follow the Money.” In whole and small group, scholars will work reading a short story called “Sour Business” and analyzing it for story elements. In independent reading, scholars will read books on their Lexile level from the READ 180 library and complete reading logs. In APP, scholars will independently work on selected APP segments to close learning gaps and complete APP logs. Scholars should have completed a total of 5 segments, 5 novels, and 5 Ereads by Feb. 14th
  • 8th Grade ELA (Hills): This week in 8th Grade ELA, scholars will continue writing their pre-trial argumentative writing assignment in preparation for the mock trial that they will complete on whichever block day that they attend my class. In short, scholars have chosen roles to play in a trial of the narrator of "The Tell Tale Heart" to determine whether he is guilty of first degree murder or innocent by reason of insanity. Scholars will use textual evidence and research that they have conducted to strengthen their argument. All directions for this summative task are in Google Classroom.
  • 9th Grade Lit & Comp (Hills/Romberg): Lit and Comp will continue to work on Unit 3: Coming of Age. Scholarss have been loaned copies of the novel Romeo and Juliet (R&J) to use for the unit. Scholars will analyze connections of Shakespeare to other texts. Scholars will also complete activities based on R&J including puns, oxymorons, soliloquies, monologues, text analysis, and types of sources writers use. Reading Guide 3 for R&J will be due on Monday, Feb 10th. Scholars should be reading at home to complete their Reading Guides. Romeo and Juliet projects due Thursday, Feb. 27th.

Science

  • 8th Grade Science (Herndon/Winkworth/Beasley/ Joyner): Scholars will review and then take an assessment on the Electromagnetic Spectrum. Afterwards, they will work on developing an understanding of how waves interact with matter. Scholars will learn how different mediums (solid, liquid, gas, and vacuums) affect waves. This understanding will help them interpret the reflection, absorption, refraction, and transmission of waves. Scholars observe these interactions all the time every day, even when they sleep. Scholars will learn the natural occurrences and practical applications of wave behaviors in their lives.
  • Herndon's Tutorial: Thursday's 3:35-4:30

Social Studies:

  • 8th Grade Georgia Studies (Sanchez/Styron/Beasley/Joyner): This week scholars will study Reconstruction. Scholars will discuss how the South was rebuilt physically, socially, economically, and politically after the Civil War was over. Topics will include the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments, sharecropping, and plans from Congress and the President for re-entering the Union. Learning activities during station rotations will include a gallery walk, doodle notes, dominoes review and exploring a PBS website about the Jim Crow Laws of the New South.
