FSC Picked to Repeat as National Champions ... Already picked to repeat as NCAA Division II Women's Lacrosse National Champs by US Lacrosse Magazine, the Moccasins picked up a second endorsement as the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association put Florida Southern atop its preseason poll (read more). In addition, the Mocs are #1 in the Sunshine State Conference Coaches Preseason Poll (read more). Florida Southern opens the 2017 season with an exhibition match vs. the Scottish Senior National Team on Feb. 13 before getting the regular season underway on Feb. 16 at Bryant Stadium vs. Grand Valley State.

Reeves Named to NCBWA Preseason All-South Team ... Moccasin Mitch Reeves has been named to the Division II Preseason All-South Region First-Team as announced by the National Collegiate Baseball Writer's Association (read more).

Baseball First Pitch This Friday ... Florida Southern gets the 2017 campaign started this Friday at 6 pm ET at the University of West Florida in Pensacola and will play a doubleheader at UWF on Saturday at 1 pm ET. The opener is next weekend as the Moccasins will host Delta State at Henley Field on Friday, Feb. 10 at 6 pm. (view schedule)

Swim Squads Excel in the Classroom ... The Florida Southern swimming teams have been honored by the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America for their academic performance during the fall semester. Both the men and women finished the first semester this season with grade point averages over 3.00 and were ranked among the top-25 teams in Division II for team GPA, earning them the CSCAA Scholar All-America Team Award (read more).

Spellman Earns Third SSC Weekly Honor ... Florida Southern College men's basketball forward Jarel Spellman has been named as the Sunshine State Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the third time this season (read more).

Mocs Split Two Games, Head to Saint Leo Tonight ... The men's basketball (8-12 overall amd 6-5 in the SSC) dropped a 94-88 game to Rollins at home last Wednesday, despite 30 points from Michael Volovic (read more). FSC rebounded with a 73-71 victory over Nova Southeastern in Jenkins Field House on Saturday behind 20 points, 12 rebounds, and eight blocks from sophomore Jarel Spellman (read more). The sophomore forward needs just 10 more blocked shots to break Christophe Humbert's record of 162 set from 2000-02. The Moccasins head to Saint Leo tonight for a 7:30 league game against Lions and will play at Palm Beach Atlantic on Saturday at 4 pm.

Women Look to Snap Skid ... The women's basketball team fell twice last week, losing a close one, 65-63, to Rollins on Wednesday as Theresa Mac-Dangosu netted 16 points (read more), and then dropping a 53-48 decision to Nova Southeastern on Saturday (read more). The losses drop the Mocs (12-7 overall) to fourth in the SSC standings at 8-3, 1/2 game behind Tampa and NSU which stand in second at 9-3. Eckerd leads the league at 10-1 with its only loss coming at the hands of Florida Southern. FSC heads to Saint Leo tonight for a 5:30 contest and then will play Palm Beach Atlantic at home on Saturday at 5:30 pm (Note: this is a single game as the men play at PBAU Saturday).

SSC Preseason Polls ... In addition to the baseball poll released last week that had the Mocs picked to finish third, the league office has released all of the Spring polls. Southern Defeats Gators 7 to 0 ... With the NFL Super Bowl this weekend, let's flashback to perhaps Florida Southern's greatest football (yes, football!) game ever. On Nov. 6, 1919, The Southern blasted that headline across the front page as "Southern triumphed over the 'Gator eleven in one of the fiercest gridiron battles ever witnessed in the State of Florida, when she surprised thousands of 'pigskin' followers by a 7 to 0 score against a team that was picked as an easy winner."
