J.R. Briggs Family Newsletter March 13th, 2019

Calendar Correction

The next early release day will be May 31st and not June 7th, as previously published. The Friday before Graduation Sunday - June 2nd is a district-wide traditional half day for building based activities and it was recorded in error. Attached is the corrected calendar.

News from the Tech Lab

Up in the tech lab, we are finishing up rotation 7. 3rd and 4th grade took on researcher roles and practiced their web research skills while also creating media projects to showcase their newfound knowledge. Ask them about their famous figure or state! 5th grade is wrapping up their Rover Derby planning before we launch into our building phase. 1st and 2nd graders became authors and illustrators creating their own stories from scratch. Kindergarten got a chance to flex their engineering muscles when we created structures that would provide shade on the playground. Lots going on in the lab!

ALiCE Parent Information Night/Morning

On Monday, March 18th at 6:00PM we will be holding a parent/guardian only information session regarding our upcoming ALiCE drill at JRB. Those in attendance will learn about the many ways we will be preparing our students to respond in the event of an unsafe school environment. We will also preview our in-class presentation to the students using the book I'm Not Scare, I'm Prepared for grades K-3, as well as a more straight forward conversation with the 4th and 5th graders. The same session will be conducted again on Tuesday, March 19th at 9:00AM. Both events will take place in the JRB cafeteria.

Celebrate Friday In Green

Students are encouraged to 'wear the green' on Friday, March 15th in recognition of St. Patrick's Day.

Down Syndrome Day Recognition and Fundraiser

March 21st is World Down Syndrome Day. Many schools around the area have been selling socks to wear for that day with the proceeds going to a variety of support and research programs. At JRB we will ask students to wear their funkiest socks and bring in a dollar if possible to donate to the NDSS (National Down Syndrome Society). It would be great if we can raise funds to support the important work the NDSS does to promote the value, acceptance and inclusion of people with Down Syndrome. Homeroom teachers will collect the donations at the beginning of the day, but we would also welcome any other donations in the front office.

MCAS Schedule

April and May bring along our MCAS assessments for grades 3, 4, and 5. In order to plan as far in advance as possible, here are the proposed session dates for 2019.

  • Grade 5- Wednesday, April 10 and Thursday, April 11.
  • Grade 4- Tuesday, April 23 and Wednesday, April 24.
  • Grade 3- Thursday, April 25 and Friday, April 26.

  • Grade 5- Tuesday, April 30th and Wednesday, May 1.
  • Grade 4- Thursday, May 2 and Friday, May 3.
  • Grade 3- Tuesday, May 7 and Wednesday, May 8.

There are many schedule alterations that take place during these dates, but most of them are simply switch lunch/recess times or the time that grade levels have special classes.
