What dangers do you see as a person stranded on this deserted island. Be specific and explain your answers.
Dangers that people see stranded on an island are the type animals there are. Some animals are dangerous so they can harm us. For example there could be a venomous snake that bites someone from your group. There will be no venom extract so you can cure the person before they die. There is also through the struggle for food. If there is not much food we must hope that we don't eat each other. There is the also the danger of when scouting for supplies you can get harmed. The woods are dangerous. You never know what you can find. There could be thorns, vines and dangerous plants you can run into. There could be mountains and when you climb up you could fall.
Create a list of characters from the novel The Lord of the Flies and add details about them using textual evidence from the novel.
One of the characters is Piggy. Piggy is fat and has asthma. "the fat boy"(Golding 8) and "my auntie told me not to run, he explained, on account of my asthma"(Golding 9). Another character is Ralph. Ralph is a boy with fair hairs and is a leader. "the boy with fair hair"(Golding 1) . Jack is another character. He is outgoing and he is not afraid to take any job.
Type the rules we created as a classroom from the board. This is something we will return to. In the meantime, pick the rule you find most important (from the ones we created) and explain why that rule, above all others is most important on this island.
- Travel in two or more
- don't go out at night
- share resouces
- clean up after yourself
- communicate effectively
- do your job
- do not kill each other
I think that the most important rule is number 6.do your job. This is because if you don't do your job then the other people you are with could suffer if you don/'t do it or if you do it but not the right way. For example if you have the job of building shelter and you don' do it then everyone will suffer if something happens or you could of done it but you only made the shelter big enough for one person and there is five of you. If you had the job of building a fire and you didn't do it they would suffer from the coldness at night. If you had the job of filtering and collecting water and you didn't do it they would suffer from thirst. If you had the job of collecting food and you didn't do it they would suffer from starvation.
One of the themes of this novel is survival. Explain why the setting of this story adds to or contributes to the theme.
The setting of this story contributes to the theme of survival because they are stuck on a island and they have to find a way to survive until they get rescued. They are struggling for people to do there jobs. They had a chance to be rescued but since Jack distracted the twins from keeping the fire the lost there chance. They already killed one of the kids because they were not careful. The kids have different jobs like gathering fruit, hunting, keep the fire going and building shelter. These are just some of the things they have done that would mostly contribute to the theme of survival.
Ralph has said, “This is a good island” (Golding 35). Ralph’s pronouncement will prove ironic; it is definitely NOT a good island. What problems do readers already know about? Explain why these problems prove this is NOT a good island after all.
Some of the problems that the readers know about is that the kid with the mulberry face is dead since they were not careful taking care of the fire so it spread and he was there. They missed there chance of getting rescued cause someone told the people tat were supposed to take care of the fire to go and get something for them so they let the fire run out.
Symbols are physical things that represent abstract ideas. The following are some of the symbols from the novel The Lord of the Flies.
- Meat symbolizes the temptation the boys face on the island.
- The Island symbolizes isolation because there is no where to go until they get rescued
- Piggy's Glasses symbolize survival because they use them to make a fire to survive
- Conch symbolizes law and order because only the person who has it may speak
- Smoke symbolizes rescue because the smoke is what is going to signal a boat for rescue
- The Platform symbolizes civilization because the platform is where they have there meetings where they make decions
- Piggy symbolizes democracy because he always fights back and he has other opinions
- Simon symbolizes goodness because he is the peace maker
- Painted faces symbolize anonymity because when you paint your face others cant recognize you
Name at least two things the boys are doing or have given up that show how they are now operating on instinct and no longer trying to follow the rules of society. Explain your answers with information from the text.
They go to the bathroom where ever and they had established to go where the rocks were. Simon tries to go to a place where he had found at night. He goes at night and they had said not to go out at night especially alone.
Two rituals people are most familiar with are weddings and funerals. Pick an event (a wedding or a funeral). Make a list of at least 3 phrases people use at the event you picked. Using one of your phrases, explain why your phrase is helpful in the situation.
- Rest in peace
- In memory of
- You will be dearly missed
You will be dearly missed is a great phrase at a funeral because that shows you care for them and you respect them. It is helpful because it shows the family what u feel for them or if you have gone threw this you understand what they are going through and you would want to here that too. In memory of is also a good phrase because you show that you know who the person that died was and u also show that you care for that person if you are naming something after them. Rest in peace is a good phrase because you are wishing the person who just died not to be worried or scared. You want them to rest peacefully without any worries or problems on there mind.
Choose a character, either Ralph or Jack and explain the effect seeing the Beast has on the character you have chosen. Use textual information to support your answer.
Ralph and Jack both saw the beast although they each had distinct effects on seeing it. Ralph took this as a some what a surprise but he also tried to stay calm about it. Jack took it really hard. He left the group and created a new one. He wanted to get Ralph not to be chief anymore when he tried he asked three times but no one raised there hands so he got humiliated.
Retell in your own words what has happened to Simon. Use textual evidence to help you create a vivid paragraph.
Simon has just died. He was coming down from the mountain to tell everyone that there was no beast it was just the parachuter that had died. When he got to where everyone was a little one thought it was the beast coming down the mountain so they attacked him. They practically beet him to death. While they beet him he kept on trying to tell them that he was not the beast and that there was no beast it was just the parachuter. They would not listen they noticed until after they had killed him.
In life people create groups. These groups might be at school, in sports, in extracurricular activities, and through religious organizations. Explain what needs groups fill for people. Explain both the positive and negative aspects of being part of a group. You may relate this to our novel, or you may make it a person reflection of your own experience.
In a group there is positive and negative aspects. Things that are positive of being part of a group is that you know they will be there for you no matter what. They are practically family. You know you can tell them what ever and they help you get through it and they wont go and tell everyone. There is also respect between the group. From experience if you have a girlfriend/boyfriend you are supposed to respect them but in a group i know does not they mess around way too much. They also don´t have a leader everyone does it together while in others one person takes charge like the person who created that group. Something that is negative is that in some groups you have to do something to get in like from my experience there is this group that to get in you have to let them beet you up for ten seconds which is kinda stupid. Well in other groups they do things that are way worse or they have to complete so many dares.
“Which is better - to have rules and agree, or to hunt and kill?”
Using this quote, take a stand. Pick a side and explain why your decision is best on this island here at the end of Chapter 11. Don’t forget to use textual evidence to support your answer.
I think that to have rules and agree is better then to hunt and kill. This is because if you are mostly focused on hunting and killing to eat then you wont be able to set your priorities. If you have rules and you agree and follow them you will be able to get everything done and they will be able to get rescued.
“There isn’t anyone to help you. Only me. And I’m the Beast. . . . Fancy thinking the Beast was something you could hunt and kill!”
I choose this picture and this quote because i think this represents what this story is based on. Here is where the Lord of the Flies speaks to Simon which is just really Simon speaking to himself with his conscious. I think that this represents the moment where it foreshadows Simon´s death because The Lord Of The Flies keeps telling him to get out of there but Simon wouldn't listen . This also represents where Simon realizes that there is no beast it is just them who are the beast.
A letter to a student next year based on what i thought on the novel
I think that this novel is amazing. This is a great book I personally would read this book over and over again. This novel has its twists and unexpected things that you would of never imagined. I best liked it when Ms.Lyda read the book because she gave it that energy and that passion that the British man and me could not do. The blog helped through the novel because I feel you can understand the novel better by breaking it down into small sections. The scenes where there was a lot of drama or a lot going on were my favorite parts because Ms.Lyda gave it that energy and made it way more interesting. I think if we would of read it on our own or the British man it would of not been the same. The book on its own was great.
