Children's Aid Society give a child love, laughter, and peace

Our Mission: Provide help for children and families to build stronger, healthier lives

The Children's Aid Society is a non-profit organization, focused on keeping children safe and healthy. CAS was organized in 1913, at the home of Sudie Mae Wingert, as an outreach of the Southern Pennsylvania Distruct Church of the Bretheren that focused on rescuing neglected, dependent and orphaned children.

The Society then later focused on meeting the emotional and immediate physical needs of children. We now have three centers that address child welfare and child-parent relationships.

Crisis Nursery

Our crisis Nursery offers short term respite care for newborn children up to six years of age. During their stat, each child receives by loving staff and volunteers. These professionals provide individual attention to children who are coming from stressful environments.

“I will never forget what you did for my family and one day I will find a way to repay the kindness you showed me.”

Child Centered Therapy

We provide professional child-focused therapeutic services to children in York, Adams, and Franklin Counties. Our family of therapists have a wide range in specialized training, including play and art therapy.

We focus on several different challenges that children may face, including:
  • Physical, emotional or sexual abuse
  • Trauma
  • Neglect
  • Transitions to and from foster care and/or adoption
  • Parental separation or divorce
  • Physical difficulties and cognitive challenges
  • ADHD, learning, or developmental disabilities
  • Feelings of depression, low-self esteem, or anxiety
  • Grief and loss
  • Behavioral problems or social difficulties
  • Family conflict and parental relationships
  • Autism Spectrum Disorder, PDD
Parent Support Groups

These groups offer parents a comfortable location to talk about the stresses, anxieties and complex issues of parenting. Just having a place to talk about these tings with other people who understand is very valuable. Groups currently meet in York and Men's and Women's York County prison and are led by trained volunteer facilitators.

For more information contact: Volunteer and Parent Support Group Coordinator Shari Gordon at 717-845-5771 ext. 105.

24-Hour Hotline & Family Advocacy

Our 24-Hour Hotline and Referral Service is available to parents and caregivers. Trained and caring staff listen, offer immediate support and help callers work through their crisis. Staff provide callers with referrals to other community resources that will help resolve issues and provide additional support.

The hotline number is 800-635-6619.

Our Family Advocacy program is a comprehensive outreach program for parents whose crises cannot be resolved in the three days when their children are staying at the crisis nursery. For some families three days is not enough time to overcome the myriad of obstacles they face, tackle their many challenges and achieve their goals. Family advocacy is an intensive and comprehensive program for parents and guardians who use the nursery on a repeat basis. Our Family Advocate works with parents to help them find the resources they need to provide a supportive family environment for their children. Parents are referred to our Family Advocate through the Crisis Nursery. For more information call 717-845-5771.
