Most people do not know the effects of healthy eating on the human brain. People often relate eating healthy to physical appearance. Therefore, a lot of people, especially college students, with great metabolism often eat what they desire, and most of the time, what they are consuming is extremely unhealthy to both their body and their brain.

With all the busy schedules, most college students have a hard time making healthy choices regarding to nutrition. Bad nutrient can cause both short term and long term effect to the brain.

Obesity is associated with significant changes in the brain. This picture shows the differences of dopamine level produced by a normal person and an obese person . Lower dopamine levels can increase cravings for fatty foods.

However, with the correct nutrition, anyone student can maximize and recover their brain functions faster.

Eggs and fish are both good source of protein.

A protein rich meal can benefit a person’s brain throughout the day. Studies have shown that protein triggers the brain to produce a variety of chemicals messenger, or neurotransmitters, to regulate wakefulness and sleep.

Whole grains, such as oatmeal, can reduce risk of heart disease. They are good for promoting blood flow through all the human body parts, which includes the brain. Better blood flow to the brain prevents it from being tired. Blood also carries oxygen to the brain; more oxygen to the brain also improve cell regeneration, which means the better development and recovery of the brain.

A traditional American breakfast that contains high amount of sugar.

Heavy sugar intake caused the rats to develop a resistance to insulin, a hormone that controls blood sugar levels and also regulates the function of brain cells; high amount of sugar in the body can hinders learning and memory by literally slowing down the brain.

The “rainbow diet” diet consists of multicolored fruits and vegetables, such as blueberries, avocado, carrots, and spinach, that contains high amount of vitamin C and E. Colorful fruits and vegetables are considering as “brainy” food due to their antioxidant properties. Antioxidants can help the human brain in terms of preventing memory loss.

Consume some sort of fish because they are high in omega-3 fish oil which is healthy for the brain. The human brain contains sixty percent fat, consuming omega-3 fish oil, which is considered as healthy fat, provides energy for the brain throughout the day.

Drink freshly brewed tea. Two to three cups of freshly brewed tea a day contains a suitable amount of caffeine, which can boost brain power by enhancing memory, focus and mood.
