Agoge Academy focuses on professional and career development for selected upperclassmen who have demonstrated a strong desire to prepare for life after football.
The programing runs during the spring semester and involves 8 sessions such as; resume writing, elevator pitch, personal branding, mock interviews, networking, and more.
The academy actively engages business leaders, some of which are San Jose State Alumni, who work 1-on-1 with the student-athlete to educate them, mentor them, empower them, and excite them for their life beyond football.
At the conclusion of the spring semester the work of the student-athlete is celebrated at an event called Dinner with a Spartan; a professional networking opportunity involving 20-25 Silicon Valley business leaders and our 10 Agoge Academy members.
AUTISM SPEAKS WALK
Autism Speaks is a non-profit organization providing education, support, and funding for individuals (and families) affected by Autism.
The football players volunteered at the walk serving in roles such as parking attendant, welcoming committee, and hype-man; in addition to participating in the walk and organizing an obstacle course for the event participants.
Starting in January 2019 the players began promoting this event to the local community by going out and hanging up posters and passing out flyers; hopeful to get the patrons of San Jose involved. Then, on April 14th, our athletic department hosted the Autism Speaks Walk.
ROBERT SANDERS MENTORING PROGRAM
The Robert Sanders Mentoring Program was developed to provide male guidance and mentorship to the selected 5th graders who otherwise do not have a strong male role model in their life.
In summer 2019, the Beyond Football Program was awarded a grant from the Bill Belichick Foundation Grant giving the mentoring program legs to grow and offer more to the involved students.
Due to this, the second year of the mentoring program included a VIP Day for the elementary students. This included a VIP day with their mentors touring the football facilities and receiving tickets to the Spring Ball game where they can watch their mentors play.
WALK A MILE IN HER SHOES
The Walk a Mile in Her Shoe event raises awareness around assault, racism, and domestic violence.
For the past 2 years San Jose State Football, through the Beyond Football Program, has participated in this walk; strapping on high heels and strutting (sometimes shuffling) through Santana Row with over 700 other community members to advocate for the victims and raise awareness around this important topic.
Beyond Football has done a variety of different events over this past year:
