Welcome to Spring Term 1
Planners should be recorded in every time a child reads—parents please read with your children at least 3 times per week and sign planners. We will look at these when school reopens to see all of the wonderful things the children have been reading!
Your child's teacher will be setting all home learning on Purple Mash. There will be a timetable set each Monday that has links to teacher videos for new learning. All activities will be set as 2Dos that can either be completed in Purple Mash or downloaded, edited and re-uploaded. Work can also be completed on paper and pictures sent to firstname.lastname@example.org

The Independent Me
We will be using history and geography skills to learn about the Roman civilisation and what they have done for us through their settlement in Shropshire. We will:
Ask and answer geographical questions about the physical and human characteristics of Shropshire and Naples. Explain own views about locations, giving reasons. Use maps, atlases, globes and digital/computer mapping to locate countries and describe features. Describe geographical similarities and differences between countries. Describe how the locality of the school has changed over time. Describe key aspects of physical geography, concentrating on volcanos. Describe key aspects of human geography, including: settlements and land use. Describe different accounts of a historical event, explaining some of the reasons why the accounts may differ. Suggest causes and consequences of some of the main events and changes in history. Describe the social, ethnic, cultural or religious diversity of past society. Describe the characteristic features of the past, including ideas, beliefs, attitudes and experiences of men, women and children. Place events, artefacts and historical figures on a time line using dates. Use dates and terms to describe events.
In English, we will write a historical narrative based on the experiences of the main characters in Escape from Pompeii.
The Creative Me
We will be using art skills to explore the Roman use of clay and mosaics to create our own artefacts. To do this we will:
Develop ideas from starting points throughout the curriculum. Collect information, sketches and resources. Adapt and refine ideas as we progress. Explore ideas in a variety of ways. Select and arrange materials for a striking effect. Ensure work is precise. Use clay and other mouldable materials. Add materials to provide interesting detail. Replicate patterns observed in natural or built environment
In dance, we will use a variety of movements in isolation and combination. Develop flexibility, strength, technique, control and balance. Perform dances using a range of movement patterns. Compare and evaluate performances against previous ones. Demonstrate improvement to achieve personal targets. We will do battle with the most organised of forces: the Romans. We will learn attack & defense formations with these expert warriors. This is a great way for us to to experience spatial and group work.
The Inquisitive Me
We will be carrying out scientific lines of enquiry with different solids, liquids and gases. We will compare and group materials together, according to whether they are solids, liquids or gases.
We will observe that some materials change state when they are heated or cooled, and measure the temperature at which this happens in degrees Celsius (°C), building on their teaching in mathematics. Identify the part played by evaporation and condensation in the water cycle and associate the rate of evaporation with temperature.
We will be further developing our design and technology skills to create a volcano model by: Using scientific knowledge of the transference of forces to choose appropriate mechanisms for a product (such as levers, winding mechanisms, pulleys and gears). Designing with purpose by identifying opportunities to design. Making products by working efficiently (such as by carefully selecting materials). Refining work and techniques as work progresses, continually evaluating the product design.
The Healthy Me
The Healthy Me will be developed through Religious Education and Personal, Social, Health Education. We will:
Understand that Sikhs believe God is one and their relationship with him can be deepened by reading the Guru Granth Sahib. Know that the Guru Granth Sahib is always central in a gurdwara and its worship services. Discuss the key features, artefacts & symbols found in a gurdwara and explain their meaning. Explain the important place of food and hospitality in a gurdwara and explain what this involves, who is welcome and why it is so important for Sikhs.
