This week we have experienced some unforeseen technical difficulty in logging into online live classes and assembly, which has caused a level of upset. The solution to the problem is actually quite straightforward, but will for some of you mean changing the setting for your child to log into Google Classroom and MS Teams. From Wednesday 27th January, ONLY children who are logged in via their Greenfields issued email address (@greenfields-pri.co.uk) will be able to gain access to the live lessons and the weekly celebration assembly. If you need support with this please contact the school office or your child's class teacher and we will do everything we can to help.
Every week, there is new DRET Challenge. Last week was a reading challenge and children were to design and make reading book marks. Well done to everyone who entered the challenge. I was very impressed with how creative you were. This week's DRET Challenge involves getting active. I will be joining in as Maeve needs plenty of walks every day so I can clock up quite a few miles. Remember, even in a Lockdown we are all allowed to get outdoors for exercise, so join in if you can.
A special thank you to our virtual school guest speaker this week, Brandon Thomas Asante (read more below). I have heard our Year 6 pupils talk fondly of their meeting with you. You have clearly inspired many of them. Please do join us again some time!
Bake off, Year 2 style
Year Two had a Bake Off this week! They were challenged to design and make a cake with their families. Mary Berry would have been proud of the amazing cakes they created, ranging from; fresh strawberry, lemon, vanilla, brownies, cupcakes, Slovakian recipes, dinosaurs, aeroplane, chocolate overloads and personalised teachers in icing! Well done to each and every one of you! We couldn't possibly pick a winner, so well done everyone. Their prize was to eat the delicious cakes they baked!
Today, Reception had a very exciting afternoon looking for fossils. Firstly they watched Mrs Clarke’s video to learn all about fossils and then they did their own research using iPads. Finally they searched for fossils in the sand tray and very carefully used brushes to clear the sand.
EggselLent, Dr Green
Year 2 have been 'eggsellent' scientists over the last 2 weeks! They have been learning all about teeth and what they are made of. They even created playdough models of the layers of teeth. They wanted to investigate the effects different liquids would have on teeth, but instead of teeth, they used eggs as the shell is similar to human tooth enamel.
They carried out the experiments at home, alongside Dr Green. The results were very interesting and they really enjoyed this cracking experiment!
Meerkats show how Marvellous they are
This week, Marvellous Meerkats have continued to show why they are the most marvellous class in the school. Mr Leach and Miss Bayes have been blown away by the incredible effort, hard work and courage that the children in Marvellous Meerkats have demonstrated in their learning this week. Despite the internet issues, which have caused disruption to many households this week, the children have still made sure to complete as much work as possible to ensure the continuity of their learning. In order to celebrate the wonderful achievements of Marvellous Meerkats, I have put together a Padlet to show off some of the amazing work that has been completed. If you would like to take a look at some of our marvellous work, please click the following button below:
Year 6 get a surprise
Year 6 were lucky to have a visit from professional footballer, Brandon Thomas Asante. He talked to Year 6 about how he channels frustrations and disappointment into positive behaviours… to keep improving and never giving up. The children had a wide range of questions, from, “What prevented you from giving up when you didn’t feel good? Hopes or dreams?” to, “What is your favourite food?”. Brandon answered all the children’s questions, tackling issues such as racism with honesty and compassion – he really was a superb guest and a great role model for the children.
Beautifully brilliant bookmarks…
This week Year 4 and 5 have been demonstrating their creativity when competing in the DRET Reading Challenge. The children were tasked with making bookmarks and boy, did they accept the challenge!
Just take a look for yourselves at just some of the amazing entries. Miss Kenny found it incredibly difficult to decide which ones to be sent to the competition but after a lot of deliberation decided on Jake’s lovely leaf print bookmark and Cassandra’s desert island themed bookmark.
Another great week of remote learning Year 4/5.
Healthy teeth in Year 2
The Year 2 bubble has absolutely loved playing with the dentist role play area this week. The children have been able to brush, floss and use mouthwash on the teeth, showing their amazing subject knowledge!
Storytime in reception
This week in home learning the children have enjoyed innovating the story ‘The Little Dinosaur’, changing the characters to bears, ducks, horses, aliens and even unicorns.
The Reception class were also lucky to meet Pascal the Chameleon for the sound c in ‘Sound Scavenger Hunt’.
I am sure everyone knows the lovely Miss Dot. She is a teaching assistant by day, a wraparound care champion from dawn to dusk, and some say she is a superhero by night! She was a proud nominee in the DRET Inspiration Awards - Unsung Hero too!
Today, she is 60 years young. The staff who love and appreciate her as much as our children and parents had a collection to help Miss Dot celebrate! I am sure you will join the staff of Greenfields in congratulating Miss Dot on her birthday.

Teachers are looking forward to posting their ‘Flipping Greenfields’ videos this Friday in time for the weekend. Each one is all about next week’s learning, so will get your child prepared for a flying start on Monday. Research shows that children who feel prepared for the coming week are less anxious about school, happier to get up and go on a Monday morning and achieve better than those who are not.
