The Alchemist: A Guide to Love, Bravery, & Conquering Doubts and Fears Lily Stokes

“Every blessing ignored becomes a curse.”(60)
This is important because it means that every blessing or opportunity you ignore will haunt you for the rest of your life because you will regret not taking that opportunity while you had the chance. In my life right now, I’m trying to focus on the things I need to accomplish in my high school career because it’s my dream to go to a UC school. If I focus too hard on going to a certain destination, I might pass up a different opportunity offered to me to go down a different path and it could ruin my future if I don't choose the right one, so I need to keep my range of options wide. Just because one path has less obstacles, it doesn't mean it's the best option for you.
“...people need not fear the unknown if they are capable of achieving what they need and want.” (79)
Many people are scared of the things outside of their comfort zones, but if they don’t go outside of it, they’ll never know if they Might like it. I Don't really like to experience new things. I tell myself that when I graduate high school I’ll be more adventurous but I will keep telling myself that for the rest of my life. It's an endless cycle of gaining confidence and then losing it once a door opens for you. The Alchemist has taught me that I have to seize the moment while I still can. You can’t fear the things that aren’t familiar to you because if you try it, it won’t be strange or mysterious to you anymore.
“We are afraid of losing what we have, whether it’s our life or our possessions and property. But this fear evaporates when we understand that our life stories and the history of the world we were written by the same hand.” (79)
We shouldn’t have such a tight grasp on the materialistic things in our lives, but we should start to appreciate the people and the experiences and memories in our lives. This is a common problem in our generation, but we don’t always realize it. In order to move on, you have to let go of everything in your past. I have a problem with my phone, like every other teenager in America. I'm starting to learn to appreciate the things around me and disconnect from the things that keep me from exploring the beautiful things in life.
“...he learned that the most important part of the language that all the world spoke--the language that everyone was capable of understanding in their heart. It was love.” (95)
Love is probably the most important thing a person could have. If you have love, you feel invincible and no one could take that away from you. This girl in the picture is my best friend of 15 years and I love her because she has helped me through my roughest patches in life and I am so grateful for her. If I did not have her to rely on, I think love would be a hard concept for me to understand. I think that in life, you need to have that one special person in your life who makes you understand what it's like to feel and give love so you know what it means to love someone else.
“Tell your heart that the fear of suffering is worse than the suffering itself” (134)
I took this picture last summer at Hume Lake, the camp I've been going to since 7th grade. Last year, I went to a ropes course around 80 feet in the air and I did this thing called the "leap of faith". I was so scared to jump, but once I did it, I felt confident and brave and so proud of myself. We have to do this in life. We have to take that leap of faith so we can conquer our fears and reach that goal. and sometimes that one leap of faith can change your whole future. My doubts and fears of failing are always getting me down. I have to learn how to believe in myself and let myself do the things I want to do without second guessing myself.
“They were seeking the treasure of their Personal Legend, without actually wanting to live out the Personal Legend.” (129)
If you want to find your destiny, you can’t just forget about it once you have it in your hands. If your parents want you to Have a certain Career, but you want to go down a different path that you're passionate about, you HAVE to follow your dream because it makes you happy. But if you go down your own path and get that job you wanted for forever and you don’t want to follow it into your future, then that’s a mistake. if it really makes your life complete, then why would you give up on it? You have to trust that things will work out but Only you can make that work and only you can Create your future.
