Harbour pointe middle school PARENT BULLETIN FOR FEBRuary 24-28 2020

BE INFORMED - BE CONNECTED - BE ENGAGED

Thank you for taking the time to read our weekly Parent Bulletin. Remember to keep checking the weekly newsletter link. We can make on-demand updates and let you know about any additions, corrections or cancellations without re-sending the link.

MESSAGE FROM THE MAIN OFFICE

The state of Washington and the Mukilteo School District have established requirements that require schools to regularly practice emergency drills. As we all know, it is important to practice and prepare for emergency situations to ensure that staff and students know what to do in case of emergencies. We want you to be aware when HP conducts drills so that you have an opportunity to talk with your child about such preparations.

On Thursday the 27th, HP has a planned lockdown drill. A lockdown is a response to an emergency condition that is occurring inside of the school (i.e. intruder) that requires staff and students to take refuge in the building.

TAKE NOTE...

  • MSD CALENDAR UPDATE When the School Board adopted the three-year MEA/MSD Collective Bargaining Agreement this past year, it approved the use of four potential make-up days after the last regularly scheduled student day in June. Therefore, barring any waiver of such days by the governor, the three snow days in January have been added to the end of the school year calendar. As a result, the new last day of school will be Monday, June 22. That means June 17 will become a regular full day, June 19 will become a LIT day (75-minute early release) and June 22 will be an early dismissal day. If we have any more school closures between now and the end of the school year, those may be added to the end of the school year as well, so be cautious in making summer plans right after school lets out.

WE HOPE YOU'VE HAD A TERRIFIC MID-WINTER BREAK!

Health News

With the coronavirus in the news lately we wanted to share information with our families not only about that virus, but best practice on how to stay healthy during the winter months.

We regularly get updates from the Snohomish Health District about a variety of latest trends, and this situation is no different. We partner with them in communicable disease surveillance, prevention, and treatment.

The latest Federal and State mandate is that students returning from China will be expected to home quarantine for 14 days after returning. Please contact the school nurse if you have questions about protocol or if you need advice on how to proceed.

The wearing of medical masks is discouraged throughout the school day, as evidence has shown that they are ineffective.

Other rationale includes:

  • Can stigmatizes the student wearing the mask
  • Can incite worry/concern by other students wondering if they should be wearing a mask to be protected to, and to be protected from “what.”
  • If you have ever worn a mask, they are uncomfortable, get hot with the humidity created, and can be a distraction to learning.
  • Creates a false sense of security. Hard to find one that fits perfectly around nose/mouth to keep it on for a long period of time. The minute you scratch your nose or touch your mouth behind the mask, you’ve lost the protection that the mask is supposed to offer.

Instead, what we CAN do, according to the CDC, to protect ourselves and others from a whole host of infections/illnesses:

  1. Wash hands thoroughly throughout the day.
  2. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
  3. Avoid contact with people who are sick.
  4. Cough/Sneeze in the bend of your arm/sleeve.
  5. Stay home when you are ill.
  6. Get immunized.

If you have questions or concerns, please call school at 425-366-5100. Thank you!

MUKILTEO SCHOOL DISTRICT 2019-2020 STUDENT CALENDAR

2019-2020 STUDENT CALENDAR

Below is the link to the 2019-2020 student calendar. Please note that on most Fridays students will be released 75 minutes early - that's 1:30PM for middle schools. Lunch will be served on these days.

NEW COMMUNICATION TOOLS

FLYERS ARE GOING DIGITAL

Say goodbye to crumpled flyers at the bottom of student backpacks that surface after an opportunity has passed. Our school district is implementing an electronic flyer distribution system. Families will get flyers in their email inbox instead. The new distribution system, Peachjar, will launch Jan. 16.

Schools and outside organizations will have a more accessible, environmentally friendly and interactive way of sharing flyers and newsletters. Primary guardians with an email address on file at their child’s school will automatically begin receiving flyers by email. If a family member would like to also receive them, they can subscribe on the school website after January 16.

LISTSERV IS RETIRING

The subscription-based email ListServ expired on Friday, January 10. The server that houses ListServ and its contacts has been wiped clean, decommissioned and given a proper “retirement celebration.” To stay in touch with SCHOOL DISTRICT announcements, events and school board news, please subscribe to the new e-newsletter (link is below):

Schools that used ListServ (like HPMS) have transitioned to Blackboard Connect, our existing mass communication system, to reach families with SPECIFIC SCHOOL INFO.

If you are the primary guardian already listed at your child’s school, you don’t need to do anything; you will continue receiving messages from your child’s school. (Just make sure we have a current email or phone number on file.)

If you are NOT receiving messages via Blackboard, you want to add a family member or you want to change the way you receive messages (email, text and/or phone call), click on the link below. (You will need your student's ID number to join.)
