THE RISE OF A MILITARY SOCIETY

  • Japan became a military by having warriors called samurais which were recalled to be brave coming together to become a army of men and fight others
  • a Shogun is the head of the military government in the time period of the samurai
  • a Daimyo is a nearby lord in the time period of a samurais as well
  • the Shogun, Daimyo, and samurai structure and their loyalties are the shoguns ruled with the help of the daimyo in charge of the samurai, the daimyo expected obedience and respect from the samurai and the samurai expected same when the did something for the daimyo

Samurai Weapons, Armor, and Fighting

  • Samurai had weapons called bows, arrows, swords, and spears
  • their military training and fighting styles were called " The Way of The Horse and The Bow" but then switched the importance over to swords because they were better for training and fighting
  • their armor had many layers to protect them but it also allowed them to move well

SAMURAI TRAINING AND GHE WARRIOR CODE

-someone became a samurai by being honest, brave, loyal, and being trained well

  • -They were training physically and mentally by doing martial arts, fencing, and shooting
  • -Bushido is: a samurais code of behavior like being honest and brace
  • -Samurai lived by their lord and would die for the lord
  • -Seppuku is ritual suicide, when a samurai did not follow the Bushido code of conduct, they would have their Seppuku ceremony

TRAINING IN WRITING, LITURATURE AND TEA CEREMONY

  • they learned how to write poetry and calligraphy
  • they has a tea ceremony which brought spirits which where the spirits of harmony, reverence, and calm

Spiritual Training

  • -most samurai were either Amida Buddhism or Zen Buddhism
  • -Amina Buddhism believed everyone reaches paradise
  • - Zen Buddhism focused on discipline and effort

WOMEN IN SAMURAI SOCIETY

  • -in the 12th century women were finally treated with more respect but only for a couple of years
  • -women were treated with less respect than their husband around the 17th century
  • -women were sometimes declined overtime
