Importance of sport

1. Sports are the sources of recreation. They provide relief and a sense relaxation in a life of monotony of routine marked by miseries, hardships and hurdles.

2. They instill or infuse a sportive spirit to take up the heavy burden of life in a lighter vein and not to think of life either as a tragedy or a comedy but as the ordinary business of living.

3. It is very essential to maintain health and physical fitness.

4. It encourages the growth of team-spirit.

5. Sports and games bring about various methods of diversions.


Definition: football is a family of team sports that involve, to varying degrees, kicking a ball with the foot to score a goal. Unqualified, the word football is understood to refer to whichever form of football is the most popular in the regional context in which the word appears. Sports commonly called 'football' in certain places include: association football (known as soccer in some countries); gridiron football (specifically American football or Canadian football); Australian rules football; rugby football (either rugby league or rugby union); and Gaelic football. These different variations of football are known as football codes.

Important competitions

There are 4 important tournaments in football:

Champions League: The biggest clash of the European league winners, the Champions League.32 teams qualify for a round robin, then 16 qualify from each group, then quarter-finals, the semis and then the finals. The latest Champions were Real Madrid as they bested Atletico Madrid of La Liga 1-1 (5-3)

World Cup: This is the biggest achievement (competition) in football internationally. It takes place every four years and thirty-two teams play this major event. The qualifying rounds take place for each confederation three years before the World Cup. The next World Cup will be held in 2018 in Russia. The bidding for the next World Cup is held before the nearest World Cup, (usually, three years before). For example, the bid for 2014 World Cup was held just after the 2010 World Cup. Brazil is the only team to win five World Cups, creating the record for winning the most World Cups in history. There has been twenty world cups, and the most recent was Germany's win in the 2014 World Cup, hosted in Brazil, There has been 20 world cups the last one being in Brazil (2014)

La Liga: The Primera División,commonly known as La Liga and as La Liga Santander for sponsorship reasons,is the top professional association football division of the Spanish football league system. Administrated by the Liga de Fútbol Profesional (LFP), La Liga is contested by 20 teams, with the three lowest-placed teams relegated to the Segunda División and replaced by the top two teams in that division plus the winner of a play-off.

Premier League: The Premier League is an English professional league for men's association football clubs. At the top of the English football league system, it is the country's primary football competition. Contested by 20 clubs, it operates on a system of promotion and relegation with the English Football League (EFL; known as "The Football League" before 2016–17). Welsh clubs that compete in the English football league system can also qualify.
