Monday, Nov. 8

Dear University community,

  • Texas A&M International University (TAMIIU) will celebrate the achievements of its first-generation students, faculty and staff with its First-Gen Week, Nov. 8 - 12.
  • First-generation (First-Gen) students are defined as individuals with parents who have not earned a four-year degree. At TAMIU, that’s over 64% of the student body. See activities scheduled at: https://www.instagram.com/txamiusole/.
  • We’re also observing #NationalDistanceLearningWeek through our 12th Annual Learning Technologies Week, also held Nov. 8 - 12. Visit program at https://www.tamiu.edu/distance/ltweek. #TAMIUFaculty can register for sessions at https://trainings.tamiu.edu.
  • This month, we’re really tooting our horn(s)…and other instruments as our Performing Arts faculty and students present some great live music opportunities…free of charge. On Thursday, Nov. 11, a Brass Ensemble Recital will be held. Up next, a Keyboard Studio Recital is happening Friday, Nov. 12. Following that, the Choir and Voice Studio Recital is scheduled Wednesday, Nov. 17. A Chamber Ensemble Recital is Friday, Nov. 19. For fans of traditional mariachi music, a Mariachi International concert is Monday, Nov. 22. Here’ s more.
  • It was great to see students celebrating their accomplishments at last week’s “Four Years, Many Futures” ceremony. A total of 1,641 students were recognized on the 18-foot Student Success Wall. See highlights in our gallery.
  • To all those who joined our initial Master Plan sessions last week, thanks. This was but the first step in an ongoing series of opportunities to enable you to provide your insight into future campus development with our parters, Perkins&Will, a leading Austin-based architectural firm.
  • Finally, this past Saturday we hosted the 2021 Walk to End Alzheimer’s here on campus. Our thanks to TAMIU Team members participating. The event was a remarkable success, with hundreds of walkers on hand. Organizers exceeded their fundraising goal, securing over $136,000 to benefit research and assistance to those experiencing this dread disease.
  • Fall Commencement Ceremonies will be Thursday, December 9, 2021 at the Sames Auto Arena. College of Arts and Sciences ceremonies for all undergraduate and graduate students will be at 11 a.m. Ceremonies for all other TAMIU Colleges and Schools graduates will be at 4 p.m. that day. Find out more from the dedicated Commencement website.
  • Registration for the Spring Semester 2022 is underway. Don’t wait to plan your next semester now.
  • How’d you like to release your inner artist this Wintermester? Screen Print is back! TAMIU Assistant Professor of Art Jesse Shaw will teach you how to produce screen prints of your own design. This Continuing Education course welcomes all levels of experience, from beginner to advanced artists. Class meets every Monday from 6 – 8 p.m. from Nov. 15 – Dec. 6, 2021. For costs and addition information, contact Continuing Education at 956.326.3068 or email ce@tamiu.edu
  • TAMIU faculty, staff, students, and the public can access National Guard-administered COVID-19 vaccines through Wednesday, November 17, 2021. We appreciate their partnership and support. Here’s more on testing.
  • TAMIU’s random COVID-19 testing is underway. If selected, you must test within 72 hours. Testing is for ALL members of the University community: students, faculty, and staff. That’s all of us…because all of us are in this together! Please share our commitment.

Have a great week… and Go Dustdevils! Stay safe and stay well.

- Pablo Arenaz, Ph.D., President
