"Over the past 2 YEARS, 700 NATURAL DISASTERS were registered worldwide affecting more than 450.000.000 people". (IMF, 2012)
WHY AND WHERE // As seen in the worldwide analysis, Pakistan is one of the most disaster affected countries. 58 million Pakistani were affected by natural disasters in the last 30 years and the country is the 2nd recipient of foreign aid.
One of the most devastating disasters in the country was the 2005 Kashmir earthquake. This disaster showcases a particular vulnerability - it happened in the northern regions of the country.
The Northern regions are subject to devastating earthquakes and landslides.
The climate is extremely cold and therefore requires proper solutions.
These regions are remote, have poor infrastructure and therefore are hardly accessible.
The local population, construction techniques and materials are highly vernacular and unique.
All these aspects make northern Pakistan, and specifically the region of Gilgit-Baltistan, an intriguing case for the development of disaster relief strategies.
