What I love about Canada BY:Baljot jagdev

UNIVERSAL HEALTH CARE

One of the things that I love about Canada is the universal health care(medicare). The term medicare refers to Canada's publicly funded health care system, it is a group of socialized health insurance plans that provide coverage to all Canadian citizens("Canadian Health Care").All Canadians have reasonable access to medically necessary hospital and physician services without paying out of pocket(Canada's Health Care System). In December 1966 the parliament of Canada passed the federal medicare legislation that insured full medicare all across Canada(The Birth of Medicare). Although that wouldn't have been possible without Tommy Douglas(A Brief History of Medicare). To develop the plan Douglas outlined 4 principles; prepayment, universal coverage, high quality of service and public administration(A Brief History of Medicare). With those key principles Tommy Douglas had accomplished something amazing. You might be wondering who makes medicare happen. Nowadays the federal government is responsible for providing funding support for health care services, setting and administrating nation standards for the health care system and providing other health care services(Making Medicare).

THE WEEKND

Abel Tesfaye(known as The Weeknd) is a Canadian singer/songwriter who had broke into the music industry in 2012 when he had released his mix-tape "House of Balloons"(Bio).Just a few years later Abel gained a lot fame when he dropped his album "Beauty Behind the Madness"(Bio). It had won many awards including a Grammy, and was one of his most successful albums(The Grammys). Abel was born on February 16, 1980 in Toronto and is now 27 years old(Famous Birthdays).Hes quite succesful for being that young. but it wasnt always this way.Just like any other musician Abel had a rough start. He was a high school dropout who was focused on making music and releasing his mix-tapes at an early age gave his career a kick-start(Bio).The Weeknd has shown that if you really want to do something, with a bit of hard work you can achieve whatever you want to do!

MULTICULTURISM

One of the other things I love about Canada is that we are a multicultural country! Multiculturalism is a term that describes ethnic and cultural diversity, it is something that helps make our world a better place.(Settlement of Cultural Affairs). In 1971 Canada was the first country in the world to adopt multiculturalism as an official policy(Canadian Multiculturalism). The 1971 multiculturalism policy of Canada had also confirmed the rights of Aboriginal people(Canadian Multiculturalism). Some might wonder why multiculturalism is important. Well one of the main reasons multiculturalism is important is because, it helps encourage dialogue between different cultures that have different perspectives(thestar.com). This basically means that multiculturalism helps people come together and bond no matter who they are.Through multiculturalism Canada recognizes the potential of all Canadians, and is a fundamental belief that all citizens are equal(Canadian Multiculturalism). Who would want to live in a world where everyone was the same, having diversity is an amazing thing!

Why should we value these things?

In my personal opinion we as a country should value these things(Medicare,Multiculturalism,The Weeknd) because many many countries don't have these things. Canada is one of the only countries in the world with universal health care, I mean how great is that! When a medical incident occurs we don't have to pay out of pocket for care. Moving on multiculturalism is one of the greatest things in the world! It is something that helps us come together as one. Like I said before who would what to live in a country without any diversity, with everyone just being the same. Countries like Pakistan and India don't have diversity, and its one of the reasons both countries are in feud with one another. Without multiculturalism the human mind only looks at his/her culture as the "right" one. With multiculturalism the human mind opens up to what other cultures are out there. Its a topic that should be greatly appreciated, because it is something that causes wars, feuds etc., and we as a country should just be lucky to have multiculturalism. Finally the Weeknd. I do admit Canada could live without a pop singer, but in a way he gives our country fame. We should appreciate him because, the music he creates can speak to people and it's just really fun to dance to!

In conclusion I hope you have enjoyed this presentation and learned a little bit about what Canada has to offer! :)
