William Floyd Fall Student-Athletic Awards Announced

William Floyd recently concluded a successful fall athletic season with three teams qualifying for the playoffs - girls tennis, football and boys soccer - and a host of student-athletes taking home postseason awards!

The varsity girls tennis team led by two-time USTA Coach of the Year Dave Pia had another outstanding season, advancing to the semifinals before losing a tough match to the No. 1 ranked Ward Melville team by a score of 4-3. This was their 15th consecutive year in the playoffs and sixth straight League and Division titles. They also finished as Section XI Big Four Champions. Altogether, the team won 12 individual awards – two All-State players in Brooke Fernandez and Hailey Loughlin; two All-County players in Chloe DeGrauw and Kaitlyn Senetto; four All-League players in Delaney Kane, Alivia Cagliano, Alyssa Drell and Paige Lyons; and Briana Gonzalez and Jessica Jones earning All-Division honors ; as well as Delaney Kane taking home the Sportsmanship Award and Brooke Fernandez earning the Suffolk County Tennis Scholar Athlete Award.
Additionally, Hailey Loughlin and Brooke Fernandez took home the Division IV Title for Doubles, as well as a third-place finish in the Suffolk County Doubles Championships; they also competed in the Tennis State Championships in Latham, NY. In the first round of that tournament, Hailey and Brooke defeated the No. 2 ranked team from West Genesee in three sets (3-6, 6-3, 6-3) and advanced to the second round of the tournament, an accomplishment that is believed to be the first ever for William Floyd student-athletes in this particular tournament.
The varsity football team coached by Paul Longo also had a great season (9-2, Big Four Champions) making it back to the Suffolk County Championship for the second consecutive year. They knocked off Patchogue-Medford and Northport in two home playoff games before losing to No. 1 ranked Lindenhurst on a rainy evening at Stony Brook University. Individual athletes earning accolades are: Keith Winfrey and Nick Silva earned Newsday All-Long Island Second Team honors. Brandon Zack, Nick Silva, Keith Winfrey and Gary Anderson took home All-County accolades. Earning First Team All-Division honors are: Robert Taiani, K.J. Berberich, Mack Driver, Nick Golde and Danny Torres; and taking home Second Team All-Division honors are: James Taitt, Stephen Nagle and Tim Clougher.
The boys varsity soccer team finished in third place in their division and clinched a home playoff game. The team fielded several athletes winning individual awards: Evan Meinke earned All-State, All-County, All-Conference and All-League accolades. Gio Fiore was named All-League and All-Conference; Mert Altun was also named All-League and All-Conference; Jojo Ditillo and Sebastian Sosa earned All-League honors; and Chris Muchow earned All-Academic honors with a 99 GPA. The varsity field hockey team saw several student-athletes earn accolades including Emily Mehnert receiving All-County; Delaney Zurowski being named an All-County Honorable Mention; and Alexa Denis and Kailyn Reynolds earning All-Division. The girls varsity soccer team fielded two All-League student athletes: Brianna Ditillo and Melany Pagan-Rosario. Head coach: Tim Trava
In girls cross country, Sandra Vivar Marin earned All-County, Academic All-County, All-League and All-Division honors. She also finished in 9th place overall for seniors in the Foot Locker Northeast Regional Cross Country Championships held in Van Cortlandt Park in Bronx, NY, resulting in All-Northeast honors. The varsity gymnastics team earned the Section XI Sportsmanship Award and produced one All-League student-athlete in Katherine Stirber. Head coach: Gia Vanacore
Girls varsity volleyball: Cassidy Samuelson followed up her Conference IAA Rookie of the Year and All-League performance as a freshman with another All-League performance as a sophomore. Head coach: Paul Vassallo
Boys cross country: Three sophomores finished ranked among the top of their class at every invitational this season: Jesci Velasquez, Greg Lobalsamo and Anthony Auciello. Head coach: Ed Noll
Golf: Anthony Cervone (left) qualified for the Suffolk County Tournament at Rock Hill Country Club. He is the first William Floyd student-athlete to accomplish this feat as a sophomore. Head coach: Steve Dorn

The William Floyd Middle School football team also received the Section XI Sportsmanship Award. Head coaches: Ron Ardito and Ron Krawczyk.
