New Teachers on The Block By: Hannah Kimmel

Every year we have a few new teachers added to the mix at James Buchanan High School. This year JBHS welcomed two new teachers to the Faculty: Mr. Black and Mr. Zirk. JB Student Media sat down with the two new members of the faculty to get to know them a little better.

Getting to Know Mr. Black

Q: Where are you originally from? A: "I'm from Bedford County which is about an hour and a half west of Mercersburg. In high school I played football and baseball up until 11th grade. Then I went into the workforce full time."

Q: What sports are you interested in? A: "I'm a big Pittsburgh fan, I follow the Steelers, Pirates, and Penguins. Hockey is my favorite sport."

Q: What college did you attend? A: "I attended the University of Pittsburgh. I double-majored in Political Science and Communications Marketing.

Q: Why did you become a teacher? A: "Education has played such a big role in my life, and to be able to share that with others is a huge opportunity for me."

Getting to Know Mr. Zirk

Q: What made you want to become a teacher? A: "I want to share the passion I speak in a second language. I think connections are key in any job you go into. If you speak someone's native language, you will be able to have a stronger and better relationship."

Q: Where did you attend high school? A: I went to New Oxford High School. I was on the Chess team, Robotics team where we went to Nationals, in the Marching Band, Volleyball, and I played Tennis."

Q: Do you have any Spanish projects you are looking forward to this year? A: "We just finished a project where every group had a Spanish-speaking country around the world. They all painted a flag and did a presentation on the country. I'm going to have teachers vote on which flag is the best, and whatever group wins is going to get a pizza party."

Spanish-speaking country flags painted by Mr. Zirk's students decorate the ceiling of his classroom.

Q: What do you like best about James Buchanan so far? A: The kids are so respectful and funny. There isn't a day I don't laugh.
