God's Heart for the Lost

God reveals his heart throughout the Bible.
Genesis 3:9

But the Lord God called to the man, “Where are you?

God's gut response to our rebellion is sacrifice. Genesis 3:15
Genesis 12:1-3

The Lord had said to Abram, “Leave your country, your people and your father’s household and go to the land I will show you. “I will make you into a great nation and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.”

God loves all nations.
Exodus 9:16

But I have raised you up for this very purpose, that I might show you my power and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth.

Exodus 19:5-6

Now if you obey me fully and keep my covenant, then out of all nations you will be my treasured possession. Although the whole earth is mine, you will be for me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.

God has always wanted to be known throughout the earth. He has an inclusive heart.
Psalm 67

May God be gracious to us and bless us and make his face shine upon us, Selah

that your ways may be known on earth, your salvation among all nations. May the peoples praise you, O God; may all the peoples praise you. May the nations be glad and sing for joy, for you rule the peoples justly and guide the nations of the earth. Selah

May the peoples praise you, O God; may all the peoples praise you. Then the land will yield its harvest, and God, our God, will bless us. God will bless us, and all the ends of the earth will fear him.

God wants praise from all nations.
Isaiah 45:22

“Turn to me and be saved, all you ends of the earth; for I am God, and there is no other.

Isaiah 60:1-3

“Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord rises upon you. See, darkness covers the earth and thick darkness is over the peoples, but the Lord rises upon you and his glory appears over you. Nations will come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your dawn."

God becomes flesh.

Jesus reveals God's heart to us. John 1:17; Hebrews 1:3
Luke 19:10

For the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost.

Matthew 9:36-38

When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.”

Jesus shows the Father's compassion to the helpless ones.
Matthew 28:18-20

Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

Jesus loves the lost so much that he sends you.
God gives you his Holy Spirit so that you can fulfill the Great Commission - Acts 1:8.

The Great Commission

Matthew 28:18-20 & Mark 16:15

Jesus commissions his disciples.

Important Points related to the Great Commission

It's a command to all disciples.

The "going" is assumed.

The "going" is everywhere - all-inclusive.

What are we called to do? Preach the Gospel; teach them to obey.

We are not sent out alone. Go in community. Go with Jesus.

The Call

Is it for you?

The Urgency of the Call

Why so urgent?

The Great Commission is a command.

Matthew 28:18-20 & Mark 16:15

Jesus is coming back. There is a time limit.

2 Corinthians 5:20; 1 Peter 4:7; 1 Thessalonians 4:16-5:11; Revelation 7:9

The crowds (the lost) are desperate.

Matthew 9:36-38

What would hold you back from the urgency of the hour?

Unbelief which blinds you from the truth.

The busyness of life (and the Great Commission becomes another Post-It-Note)

Anxiety and fear, which paralyzes you and keeps you from moving forward

Fighting for your rights / control

What can you do?

Give Jesus your "Yes!"

Go now. Don't wait. Get trained as you go.

Cry out for God's heart. Ask him to help you see people and feel for them the way he does.

Be led by the Holy Spirit in prayer.

Reorganize, Re-prioritize, Reorder your life under the Great Commission.

Run the race marked out for you - Hebrews 12:1-3.
