Diving the Great Barrier Reef Fulfilling a Dream

Perhaps the biggest reason for my winter-break trip to Australia was to dive the Great Barrier Reef. After visiting Sydney and then Alice Springs in the heart of the Outback, I headed to Cairns on the coast.

Cairns is peaceful little town whose economy is completely devoted to the reef. On day two of my visit, I found myself on a boat heading about an hour out to sea. The two dives were fantastic. I did not even panic too much when a shark passed us within about 20 feet. It was a great day!

Here I am with my new dive buddies from Japan. They were a great group of guys. I owe a big thank you to Nobuyoshi-san (second from the right) who sent me these photos.
