Global Expeditions 2019

Your passport to learning

At Whitsunday Anglican School we are very proud to be able to offer a range of Global Learning experiences to our community that takes the classroom into the world. The life-skills participants develop through leadership, cultural, language and service experiences cannot be gained sitting behind a desk. They are gathered by travelling as a member of a team, whilst exploring new cultures. We are pleased to offer the following Global Expeditions in 2019:

Peru | Japan | Fiji

Peru (Service Learning)

When: 21 June - 2 July

Cost: $6395 (Approx.)

Who: Year 11 & 12 students in 2019, Staff, Parents, Old Scholars

Get ready for two weeks of eye-opening community service, cultural immersion, and adventure near Machu Picchu. Immerse yourself in off-the-beaten-track villages in the Sacred Valley and work alongside the friendly locals. You will live in home stays and camp in rural villages, and assist in meaningful service projects under the guidance of community members. Come play with local children, raft the rapids of the Urubamba river to see a different side of Peru, explore traditional textile markets, and hike the Incan ruins of Machu Picchu.

Japan (Language)

When: 7 - 18 April

Cost: $3600 (Approx.)

Who: Year 8 - 12 students in 2019, Staff (Students who study Japanese have priority)

Travelling to Japan in April is a highly sought-after experience. The combination of Sakura, Cherry Blossom Trees, in bloom, framing the iconic Osaka Castle and even more rare to see, snow covered mountains, will be a sight not to be missed for our students. The rich culture and history of Japan will be on offer, with a day trip to Kyoto for a Maiko Experience and to view Kinkakuji the Golden Temple and Sanjuusangendo, a Buddhist temple built in the 1100’s. We shall also head far north to Noheji, a small fishing village famous for its freshly caught seafood and Japan’s largest Buddha statue. Whilst there, students will spend the day at a Japanese school, immersing themselves in the language and making new friends from across the globe. We will also visit Mount Hakkoda and spend a day on the snowy skifields, viewing Japan from a whole new angle. In addition, the big cities Tokyo and Osaka will be a highlight, from the quirky sights of Harajuku, the world’s busiest pedestrian crossing at Shibuya and the famous street food of Dotonbori. A trip to Japan cannot be done without visits to Disneyland and Universal Studios for those daredevil students among us. Finally, a trip to Osaka’s world renowned Aquarium will complete our journey. Traversing Japan’s rail and subway systems, sampling authentic Japanese cuisine and the range of cultural and language experiences on offer will be sure to be a highlight for students throughout the holidays, returning home just in time for Easter with their families.
