Confidence

Mark 4:35-41 NIV

That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.” Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him. A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?”

He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.

He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”

They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”

What was the disciples' view of Jesus before and after he calmed the storm?

Hebrews 10:35-39 NIV

So do not throw away your confidence; it will be richly rewarded.

You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised. For in just a very little while, “He who is coming will come and will not delay. But my righteous one will live by faith. And if he shrinks back, I will not be pleased with him.” But we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who believe and are saved.

What causes us to shrink back?

Our choices...

Unbelief

Hebrews 3:12-13 NIV

See to it, brothers, that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God. But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called Today, so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness.

Living on the edge

1 Corinthians 10:12 NIV

So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall!

Living in Deception

1 John 1:8 NIV

If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.

Living in Condemnation

1 John 3:21-22 NIV

Dear friends, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God and receive from him anything we ask, because we obey his commands and do what pleases him.

Confidence in the Flesh

Philippians 3:3-4 NIV

For it is we who are the circumcision, we who worship by the Spirit of God, who glory in Christ Jesus, and who put no confidence in the flesh– though I myself have reasons for such confidence.

Walking in Confidence

And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him. Hebrews 11:6 NIV

Deal with unbelief.

(repent)

2 Peter 1:3-4 NIV - His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.

Grab hold of God's promises.

(Do you know them?)

Hebrews 4:16 NIV - Therefore let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

The Action of Confidence

Confidence = to express freely, openly, boldly, publicly (i.e. use your mouth)

Your mouth activates the Spirit's work of confidence-building.

Hold onto your confidence. Don't throw it away. You can do this.
