Notes from the President May 20, 2018

Hello Falcon Families!

I hope that everyone had a wonderful weekend!

Important District Information

College Courses Start This Week

Our dual enrolled students begin their Spring/Summer college courses this week. Please note that college courses will be added into student schedules to reflect this term.

Summer Intervention

In order to best support our College Preparatory students academically and socially/emotionally, we will be adjusting our Flex Block to be intervention specific beginning Monday, June 11th.

  • Students will be dismissed daily at 3:30pm and our faculty will be holding core academic interventions. Teachers will communicate recommendations to both students and parents weekly.
  • This will provide students consistent core academic intervention, and an additional time to enjoy during our summer months.
  • Parents that would prefer their student to stay for the intervention hour, or are unable to arrange for transportation at 3:30pm, please know that all of our faculty and staff will be present. There will be space and faculty support for students wanting/needing to stay until 4:30pm.
Healthy Food Options

I would like to remind families and students that we have begun an important transition this term. We are working on transitioning our snack options to healthier choices to support our whole child movement. The physical health of our students is just as important as strengthening their minds. Please see a letter from Miss Melissa Shaw outlining our initial changes starting this first week of our Spring/Summer term.

Part of our responsibility as student mentors and role models is to ensure that we are providing students with guidance on healthy habit building. One way to support with this is to provide healthier food and beverage choices and demonstrating these types of habits. Starting Monday, May 21st, we will be reinforcing our expectations regarding food and drinks throughout the day, and we will be increasing our healthy options for students.

  • Our vending options will be updated to provide healthier snack and beverages for students to choose.
  • Students will be expected to use vending in our main area rather than vending on the first floor of HLC.
  • Students will be allowed to have water, G2 Gatorade, flavored or sparkling water, juice, and tea as appropriate beverages. Energy drinks, soda pop, or other heavy sugar drinks should remain at home.
  • Students will be expected to keep food put away during classes unless in an emergency and the teacher has approved.
  • Students will have additional healthier options during lunch that will be available daily.

We are asking that our families support us in striving to help our students have healthy minds and healthy lives.

Staffing Updates!

We have been fortunate to have Mr. Greg Duffy and Miss Briana Zizic join our team over the past few weeks, stepping in to support our students and JPEC. Mr. Duffy has taken on Mrs. Reed's classes while she is out on maternity leave. Miss Zizic has taken on our English vacancy supporting our department and our College Prep team while we continue our search. We are also welcoming Miss Rachel King who will join our team tomorrow, May 21st, taken on our College Prep science courses while Mrs. Jenna Nachazel is out on maternity. Miss King is a certified science instructor coming from Michigan State University, and we are very fortunate and excited to welcome her! We are also welcoming Mrs. Alex Elfe back who is returning to her position as our Chief of Staff tomorrow, May 21st!

College Preparatory Update

Announcements & Upcoming Events

Term 3 Add/Drop

Students had the opportunity to add/drop courses during the past week. Schedules were updated on a rolling basis, and will be double checked this week to finalize. Our add/drop period is over.

Tentative Field Day on June 14

Annually we like to hold a Field Day during the summer for our College Prep students to celebrate as a school and to enjoy activities together outside. We are tentatively holding Thursday, June 14th as our date this year! Please mark your calendars!

College Prep 1st year STEM Camp

With the state's current push for increasing both Pathway options at the high school level, and increase STEM opportunities for students, we believe providing more opportunities for our College Prep students to explore science, engineering, and STEM will allow them to better identify interests and skill sets they have.

  • We are providing our first year College Prep students (6th grade) with a free STEM camp through a partnership with JAMA and Shop Rats: I Can Make It Camp
  • The camp is the 2nd week of July 9-13, and we are expecting all of our 6th grade students to attend this great opportunity!
  • If you have not registered your student, please do so as soon as possible!
  • If you need support in registering your student please let our office know!

Early College Update

Mr. Jonathon Marowelli

Violet Sager is our Student of the Week!

Early College Student of The Week

"I have had the pleasure of having Violet as my student for two years, and she has continued to impress me with her strong academic work ethic, progress, and likable personality. Violet is a prime example of a perfect student. Not only does she take her coursework seriously, but she is always looking out for her classmates; whether it be to help them with their homework or just a good friend to talk to. Violet is good-hearted and always pushes herself to be a better person, this is reflected in her impressive GPA and ongoing list of friends. She is certainly a student who brings out the best in JPEC culture. And last - but not least - she is a huge movie buff who can always give you the rundown on all the latest movies!" - Mr. Perrotta

New Term!

Thank you for submitting schedule changes through the Google form and describing your needs with specificity. This has allowed me to process changes with as little hassle as possible. As I finish processing schedule changes, please be patient. Most have been processed at this point, but a few still remain.

SAT Results

I called College Board this past week and spoke to a representative about SAT results, as some students have not yet received scores. They assured me that it was a rolling process and that students should be patient.

Albion Update

With the term underway, this week Mr. Malmquist and I will be reconnecting with Dr. Dunham at Albion College to continue our work on formalizing the transition process for JPEC students to begin dual enrollment at Albion College. We look forward to the opportunities this presents for our JPEC Falcons!
