Tenant Education Seminar

On Thursday, March 30th, the City of Peoria Community Development Department hosted a tenant training session at the George Washington Carver Center from 6-8 PM.

This seminar provided an opportunity for tenants to learn more about the rights and responsibilities they have as renters.

Neighborhood Enhancement Coordinator Raven Fuller discussed ways that renters can become more involved in their neighborhoods and how to effectively communicate with neighbors and landlords.

Code Enforcement Supervisor Ashley Elias shared some life-safety red flags for tenants to look out for when touring a prospective home along with some basic property maintenance tips and tricks.

First District Councilwoman Moore joined the conversation to listen to tenants' questions and concerns.
Following presentations from City staff, Prairie State Legal Services offered guidelines to tenants outlining their rights and responsibilities under the law.

In addition to an overview of tenant rights, Prairie State Legal Services also presented the protections that tenants have under The Fair Housing Act and what steps they can take if they feel they are being discriminated against.

Rounding out the seminar was Navicore Solutions, a local non-profit focused on increasing financial literacy among tenants.

Navicore provided resources and advice to tenants seeking to improve their credit score and creating a workable household budget that makes paying rent a priority.

Stay tuned for more information on tenant education coming from the Community Development team!

A huge thank you to all who came out to join us for the first tenant education seminar, but especially to our partners Navicore Solutions and Prairie State Legal Services.
