HOW TO PREPARE
"A little preparation, will result in stunning headshots, that work for you"

A few days before your headshot photoshoot, be sure to drink lots of water and stay hydrated. This will make huge difference to how your skin photographs.

Eat healthily and avoid too much alcohol before your headshots session. Yours eyes will be the focus of attention in your headshots, so everything in moderation.

Pay attention to your quality of sleep before your headshots session. Getting the right amount and good quality sleep, will help you look well, rested and fresh.

If your skin is prone to dryness, it can really help to moisturise for a few days, before your headshots session.

If you self tan, leave at least 7 days between your tanning session and your headshots photoshoot. Self tans, often give the skin an orange hue in headshots.

For the ladies, you may want to attend to any hairs, around any problem areas, such as top lip, nasal hair etc. As a guide, if it's something that bothers you in daily life, then make sure you take care of it a few days before your headshot session, giving your skin a chance to settle. We can always retouch any problem areas.

For the men, if you are going to be radically changing facial hair i.e. removing a thick beard, take care of this a few days before your shoot. This will give the skin a chance to calm before your photographed. However, some of our actors often shave part way through the shoot, so as to give two distinct looks; not a problem but just be aware, if you are prone to shaving rash. We can always retouch any problem areas in post production.

WHAT CLOTHING TO WEAR
"Clothing choices are important, they can add to the feel of the headshot.

Clothing - don't bring anything to bold or patterned as it will grab the viewers attention. We want you to be the headline, not your clothes.

both are equally great headshots but the shirt on the right is less distracting

Choose colours that go well with your eye colour. This can really make or break a headshot. If you are unsure, go for neutral tones but avoid pure white where possible.

A big mistake actors often make, is to go for a heavily styled look. You want your headshots to have a wider appeal to casting directors, producers and agents. If you go for a very heavily styled look, you will reduce the number of opportunities to be cast in different roles.

Always, always choose clothes that have a fitted look. Big and baggy clothes, never look great. The small amount of clothing that appears in your headshots, is still very important and can help set the tone and feel of the images, which can be fun, serious, casual, relaxed, authoritative etc.

If you are going for a few different looks in your headshots session, think about the types or style of neck lines, for the clothes that you bring. It can be helpful to have some choices on the day. Even if you don't use them all, at least you will have options with you, just in case something doesn't photograph well.

HOW TO WEAR YOUR HAIR
"Don't radically change your hair before your headshots, your hair needs to look like you do normally."

For actors, the way you normally wear your hair at an audition, is the way it should look for your headshots session.

If you are a business professional, you need to actually look recognisable from your social media and professional profile pictures. Like you on your best day.

We suggest having your hair professionally done 5-7 days prior to the shoot. Women should leave their hair down, but go with two-to-three looks, maybe incorporating and up-do look.

Subtle changes in the way you style your hair can change your look completely. For example, lightly tousled hair can portray a more relaxed fun image. A more carefully styled hair can portray a more serious or corporate look.

MAKEUP TIPS
"When you book online, you can add professional makeup and hair styling. If you are happy doing your own, then here a a few tips for you too."

We suggest that you go for a natural and clean look for makeup. You can always emphasise your eyes more with eyeliner, later in your shoot, if you’re trying to capture a more dramatic look in your headshots. Otherwise, go easy on the eyeliner.

Your makeup needs to be subtle, nothing to dark and bold, although accenting eyes and lips always looks good. A subtle base helps your complexion look naturally healthy. Definitely avoid heavy contouring. You want it to be you, you on your best day.

MOISTURISE. This is in capitals because it’s that important. If you want a flawless look, you need moisturised skin. If you do nothing else, make sure you do this the night before.

Concealer. Another essential, concealer, will hide the dark shadows beneath your eyes.

Define your brows. Not essential but we recommend having your eyebrows threaded to get a great outline, and then filling in with pencil. Which leads us on to the next tip…

Blend, blend, blend. This applies to foundation, blusher, eyeshadow, eyeliner, all of it – blend away harsh edges and lines with a clean brush or a damp sponge.

Contouring. Adding light and shade helps prevent your face looking flat. This doesn’t mean scary catwalk model blocks of colour, you can simply use a bronzer on your nose, forehead and the top of your cheeks for a sunkissed look.

Natural light. Where possible, we recommend doing your make up in natural light. If you get it right in natural light, it will look good anywhere. If you are doing your own makeup, you are welcome to use either our daylight makeup station, or our fully lit makeup mirror in the studio.

Invest in the right tools. Good brushes will make all the difference. Keep them clean by simply washing them with a nice-smelling handwash.

Most Importantly, relax, have fun and enjoy the experience. We will direct you throughout, your in safe hands.
