In the EL pottery course, I had the chance to free up my imagination and think about what I can do to build a luminary --- because of its simplicity in definition: a container that a bulb would fit in. Just like every class I took with Rachel, she showed the detailed steps we needed to take to build a successful luminary, while at the same time encouraging us to jump out of the box. As a 2-D focused artist, this opportunity for me to explore the beauty of 3-D art was fascinating. I eventually finished my piece in respect to the Bocca Della Verita (mouth of truth) in Italy, the piece aims to express the variation of truths different people see from different perspectives.

We all watched how the nation fled to the streets to protest for equal rights, and we wanted to do our part too, even though we couldn’t travel and join them. So 16 other incredible students and faculty members and I painted this to draw attention to police brutality and Black Lives Matter. I understand that everyone processes and deals with their feelings in their own way, so finding a way to bring people together during this hard time was key.

One of the most frustrating things I’ve experienced with taking photos is trying to get the photo to look as good as in real life. It never happened for me until I took Photography at WMS and learned how to make my subject look as good in photo form as it did in real life. Learning this skill has helped me make great strides in my photography, and has helped me accomplish portfolios that I am proud of.
