RING PATTERNS A look back at September 2017

In September we said goodbye to summer but hello to another good month for the breed. Collies accrued 40 Group placements, 1 Best Owner-handled in Show and 28 National Owner-handled Series placements. The only month close to these numbers this year was back in May with 47 Herding Group placements and 26 owner-handled placements.

Group One :: CH Cyndella's Divatude :: Arapahoe Kennel Club :: Judge Fred Bassett :: 103 Herding dogs shown on the day :: September 23, 2017

Five collies, three rough and two smooth, earned 12 Group One awards. Seven of the awards went to the rough, GCHG Sylvan Argent Hollywood And Vine, two to the rough, GCHS Dea Haven's Ice Blue Dream and one each to smooth, GCHS Jereco's Simply Irresistible, rough CH Cyndella's Divatude and Ceilidh's Your Wildest Dreams -- all the way from the 6-9 Smooth Puppy Dog class. These were the judges who saw the collie as the top herding dog of the day: Gloria Kerr, Cindy Meyer, Jacqueline Stacy, Jon Cole, Murrell Purkhiser, John Wade, Glen Stark, Col. The month's largest number of herding dogs shown at a show in which a collie placed was 193 at Richland Kennel Club in Washington on September 30. The award was a Group 4 and the honor went to the rough collie, GCHB Tallywood Chandelier. The judge was Deborah Anthony.

In past features, we have mentioned how seldom it is when a Herding Group judge places both varieties of collies on the same day in the same group. It happened this month at a 4-show circuit in Jackson, Mississippi where on 3 of the 4 days, Judges John Wade, Jacqueline Stacy and Glen Stark all saw the collies as the top herding dogs of the day or very close to it. Stacy and Wade placed the collies first and second, although they swapped the order and Stark placed the collies Group 1 and 3. The awards went to GCHS Dea Haven's Ice Blue Dream and Ceilidh's Your Wildest Dreams.

23 collies awarded Group placements in the National Owner-handled Series: Herding Group judges placed collies 28 times during the month. The smooths took 13 of the placements compared to 15 for the roughs. There were five Group 1 awards -- three for the smooths and two for the rough.

The lone Best Owner-handled in Show was awarded to smooth collie, GCHS Travler's Zee Journey, BN, RN, CGC by Judge James Taylor, on the last day of the month, at the Finger Lakes Kennel Club show in Romulus, New York.
