Jazz Fest weekend 1

The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival is hands down my favorite time of year and I have been an avid attendee since I was a kid. Here are some of my highlights from the first weekend!

day 1: friday, april 28

This year's Jazz Fest highlighted the rich history of Cuban art and it's relationship with the city of New Orleans.

James Andrews & The Crescent City Allstars

James Andrews never disappoints. At one point in the show, he and his band took to the crowd and started an impromptu secondline. His wife also joined in on a couple songs including a great rendition of Etta James' "At Last."

day 2: saturday, april 29

My first day happened to be the very first time I witnessed Jazz Fest from gates opening to gates closing. Late Friday night/early Saturday morning, I had tickets to a party hosted and DJ'd by The Roots drummer, ?uestlove. This party was originally scheduled for October at Tipitinas but was rescheduled for Saturday morning (2am) at the House of Blues. I still don't know how I did it, but I managed to stay at the party until it ended (around 5:30am) and still made it back to the fest before the gates open! I've been to a party DJ'd by ?uestlove before and he never disappoints with his wide range of records, spanning every genre of music. One of my favorite current musicians, Robert Glasper, even made a guest appearance on stage.

Jazz Pianist Abdullah Ibrahim is a legend on the South African jazz scene and studied under Duke Ellington. He also happens to be the father of rapper Jean Grae. Ibrahim has played with legends such as John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman, and Pharaoh Sanders. New Orleans jazz trumpeter and legend in his own right, Terrence Blanchard, joined with him this afternoon.
