African Americans

How were they treated ?

  • African Americans experienced discrimination and segregation while serving the army.
  • They weren't hired in many jobs because of their race.
  • While serving the army, they were not allowed in the front line

How did they respond to such treatment ?

African Americans created a movement called the Double V Campaign which represented two victories - one at war and one against the inequality in the country.

Did they contribute anything to the cause of the war ?

  • More than a million African Americans fought in the war and over 2.5 million registered for draft
  • The Tuskegee Airmen were the 1st black servicemen to serve as military aviators in the U.S. armed force
  • They served in the Army, Army Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard

What is your analysis? Opinion? Reaction to the actions taken by each community ?

Even though African Americans were discriminated and segregated in the army, they still worked hard to help win the war and at the same time fighting for equality.

Women

How were they treated ?

  • Women were only allowed non combat jobs
  • They were paid less than men
  • Before the war, they could only be housewives

How did they respond to such treatment ?

Women formed their own sport groups and eventually proved that they were fully capable of working the same or similar jobs as men

Did they contribute anything to the cause of the war ?

They filled male jobs, joined the nurse corps, and armed forces so that more men could be sent in to combat

What is your analysis? Opinion? Reaction to the actions taken by each community ?

Women were treated badly in the workplaces during the war, but later on women proved that they can be as strong as men by filling in male jobs and going out to help the army. They contributed an important way to winning the war.

Similarities

  • African Americans and women were not hired in specific jobs
  • They were not allowed the same opportunities or rights as white men
  • They were excluded in activities and sports
  • The need for workers during the war changed the role of women and African Americans

Differences

  • African Americans were sent into combat while women were nurses
  • Women needed to fill in many traditionally male jobs
  • African Americans experienced discrimination and segregation while serving the army
