Soles 4 Souls … Attention anyone with a closet! Those shoes you no longer want are desperately needed to fight the human tragedy of global poverty. That's the message being delivered by Florida Southern College student-athletes, who have launched a drive to collect at least 100 pairs of shoes to help the poor. Used and new shoes can be dropped off at the Florida Southern College Athletic Training room or in the athletic administration offices (read more).

Spellman Sets Block Record ... In just two seasons, Jarel Spellman has established himself as the captain of the block party, breaking the FSC career record for blocked shots. The sophomore forward recorded eight blocks on Saturday at Palm Beach Atlantic to give him 166 in just 51 games, breaking the old record of 162 set by Christophe Humbert in 91 games over three seasons from 2000-02. Spellman ranks third in the NCAA Division II with 76 total blocks and 3.45 blocks per game. For his efforts, he was named the Sunshine State Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the fourth time this season (read more).

Mocs Split A Pair … Florida Southern travelled to Saint Leo last Wednesday and found itself on the wrong end of a 68-65 score as the Lions nailed a three-pointer at the buzzer. Jeremiah Davis led FSC with 26 points, connecting on 12-of-25 field goals (read more). The Moccasins returned home on Saturday and registered a 91-85 win over Palm Beach Atlantic. Jarel Spellman and Tyler Ross each scored 18 points as five Florida Southern players scored in double figures (read more).

McKew Named Conference Golfer of the Week … For her efforts at the Barton Invitational, fifth-year senior Shannon McKew has been selected as the Sunshine State Conference Golfer of the Week (read more).

Women’s Golf Takes Third at Barton Invitational ... Behind a two-over par 74 from junior Abbey Williams and a 76 from fifth-year senior Shannon McKew and sophomore Tori Higgins, Florida Southern closed out the Barton College Invitational with a 307 that put them in third place out of 17 competing teams (read more).

Baseball Opens with Sweep at West Florida … The 20th-ranked Moccasin baseball team played at Pensacola on Friday and Saturday and came away with a three-game sweep over #19 West Florida … In game one, Logan Browning took to the hill and limited the Argonauts to two runs on five hits over 5-1/3 innings with five strikeouts as the Moccasins took a 5-2 win. Jason Sierra lifted FSC to the win with a three-run homer in the fifth inning (read more) … Game two went 11 innings before the Moccasins pushed across a pair of runs in the top of the 11th powered by back-to-back doubles by Omar Villaman and Mitch Reeves. Villaman had four hits in the game while Browning added three base knocks as the Moccasins win 5-3 in extra innings (read more) … The Moccasins completed the sweep in game three as Evan Barnes, making his season debut, drove in five runs on four hits in a 7-3 FSC victory (read more).

Reeves Picks Up Another HonorMitch Reeves has been named to the Preseason All-America third team by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. The senior leftfielder was earlier named to the All-South first team by the same organization (read more).

Women’s Basketball Picks Up Back-to-Back Wins ... Anja Fuchs-Robetin and Theresa Mac-Dangosu combined for 47 points as both players reached career highs in a 74-61 win at Saint Leo last Wednesday. Fuchs-Robetin netted 27 points while Mac-Dangosu pumped in 20 points (read more) ... Fuchs-Robertin hit for 17 points on Saturday while Camille Giardina contributed 20 points as the Moccasins breezed to a 88-60 win over Palm Beach Atlantic at home (read more).

Men’s Golf Set to Host The Matlock … The Florida Southern men’s golf team will begin its Spring season on Feb. 13-14 by hosting The Matlock Collegiate Classic at Lakeland’s Lone Palm Golf Club. Beside the third-ranked Moccasins, this year’s tournament features top-ranked West Florida, No. 2 Lynn, No. 4 Barry, No. 5 Nova Southeastern, No. 7 Rollins, and No. 8 North Alabama. Saint Leo is ranked No. 12, Florida Tech No. 14, Valdosta State No. 16, and Columbus State (GA) No. 21. Among those receiving votes are Georgia College, Armstrong State (GA) and St. Edward’s (TX), while Eckerd completes the field.

Men’s Tennis Falls Twice on the Road … The FSC men’s tennis team went on the road to open the 2017 season at Flagler in St. Augustine. The Saints grabbed a 2-1 lead after doubles and then took four of six singles matches in a 6-3 win over the Moccasins (read more). The next morning, Florida Southern dropped a 6-1 match at Division I Stetson. FSC won two of the three doubles matches (for one match point), but couldn’t maintain the momentum as the Hatters swept the singles (read more).

Softball Takes Two-out-of-Three at Eckerd Tourney … Freshman Kristen Beacham tossed a four-hit shutout as Florida Southern downed Chadron State, 6-0, to open the 2017 season at the Eckerd College Invitational on Frida. Shannon Bell and Desirae Klumpp each had two hits while Jessica Trana added two RBI in the win (read more) … On Saturday, Kelli Gault held Eckerd scoreless into the fifth inning as the Moccasins picked up win #2 with a 3-1 decision over the host Tritons. Eight different players recorded a hit for FSC (read more) … The steak came to a close Saturday night as Saint Leo put up back-to-back three-run innings in a 6-3 win over the Moccasins (read more).

Men’s Lacrosse Drops Heartbreaker in Season Opener ... The Florida Southern College men's lacrosse rallied back from a late two-goal deficit to tie things up, but No. 7 LIU Post scored with 12 seconds remaining to eke out an 11-10 victory in the 2017 season opener on Monday at Bryant Stadium. Sophomore Dalton Simpson scored three goals while Tyler Kopen added a pair of tallies for FSC while goalkeeper Matt Lalli registered 14 saves. (read more).

Women's Tennis Warms Up for Season Opener ... Florida Southern got ready for today's regular season opener at Flagler by playing in the University of Tampa Invitational over the weekend. Playing in a players-only, Liona Rionda went 3-0 while Lola Asis posted a 2-0 record. Nataljia Poppvic and Linnea Skymberg won their lone singles matches while Avery Hunter and Katie Stanford each split a pair of matches. On the doubles side. Nionova and Devrimci paired for a 2-0 record as did the dou of Skymberg and Popovic.

In 1993, the Florida Southern softball team won the NCAA Division II National Championship, capturing the first NCAA title for the Moccasin women's program. The drive to the championship began with a 23-1 mark in the Sunshine State Conference. The Mocs went on to climb out of the loser's bracket in the NCAA Regional Tournament to advance to nationals. At the NCAA Tournament, it was deja vu as the Mocs once again fought their way out of the loser's bracket to win it all with an 11-5 win over Augustana. FSC finished the year with a 45-11 record.
