Smoky Hill High School is a public, comprehensive, suburban, college-oriented high school with a student enrollment of approximately 2,100 students in grades 9-12 and is one of six high schools in the Cherry Creek School District.
The school calendar is 180 days in length and is comprised of two eighteen week semesters. The daily class schedule consists of eight 95-minute instructional blocks arranged on a 4 period alternating day rotation.
Smoky Hill High School is accredited by both the Colorado State Department of Education and the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. Smoky Hill has been recognized as a National Blue Ribbon School and as one of the top high schools in America by both Newsweek and the Washington Post.
The Smoky Hill faculty and staff are well educated and qualified. There are 190 staff members that work with Smoky Hill students and of those, 153 are certified teachers. Four deans and seven counselors provide students with support and services.
The high school curriculum is comprehensive, ranging from fundamentals to advanced courses in English, social studies, mathematics and science to foreign language.
Graduation
91% of Smoky Hill graduates were accepted in four-year or two-year colleges. Of those attending college, 83% attended in-state colleges and 17% attended out-of-state colleges. 3% entered into military services.
Class of 2020 Smoky Hill graduates earned over $10,000,000 in scholarships.
Smoky Hill High School is proud of the prestigious institutions its graduates go on to attend in their post secondary education. Recent graduates have moved on to attend over 560 institutions, including Harvard, Stanford, MIT, Duke, University of Colorado at Boulder and Colorado State University.
Program Descriptions
Advanced Placement
Smoky Hill offers over 20 Advanced Placement courses. Students in AP classes participate in rigorous curriculum preparing them for AP exams and potential college credit. Advanced Placement courses and exams are offered in 28 subject areas.
AVID
Advancement Via Individual Determination: AVID students are enrolled in rigorous college preparatory curriculum as well as an elective AVID class that provides academic instruction, tutorial support and motivational activities.
IB (MYP & DP)
IB Middle Years Program - MYP: The IB Middle Years Program provides a framework of academic challenge that encourages students to embrace and understand the connections between traditional subjects and the real world, and helps them become critical and reflective thinkers. The two-year curriculum for freshmen and sophomores consists of eight subject groups including Language and Literature, Language Acquisition, Individuals and Societies, Sciences, Mathematics, Art, Physical and Health Education, and Design. The program is designed to prepare students for the IB Diploma Program.
IB Diploma Program - DP: The IB Diploma Program is a comprehensive and rigorous two-year curriculum for juniors and seniors that provides students with a balanced education and preparation for IB examinations. The IB Diploma Program results in students earning college credits and the internationally recognized IB Diploma, in addition to their Colorado High School diploma.

Graduation Requirements
High school is considered a four-year course of study. Graduation requirements are based upon units of credits earned in grades 9 through 12. A minimum of 22 credits must be earned in order to meet graduation requirements.
- English - 4.0 credits
- Social Studies - 1.5 credits
- U.S. History - 1.0 credits
- American Government - 0.5 credits
- Mathematics - 3.0 credits
- Science - 3.0 credits
- Physical Education - 1.5 credits
- Health - 0.5 credits
- Fine Arts - 1.5 credits
- Electives - 5.5 credits
Beginning with the Class of 2022, all graduates of the Cherry Creek School District, in addition to the required 22 credit requirements, must also meet competency benchmarks for that indicate preparedness for success in college and career, as indicated by Board Policy IKF.
Grading System
The Cherry Creek School District offers students and parents the opportunity for an official transcript that reflects a weighted grade point average. Weighted grades are given in those courses designated as either Honors, Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate. The difference between weighted and unweighted grades in terms of grade point value is as follows:
- A = 4 points unweighted / 5 points weighted
- B = 3 points unweighted / 4 points weighted
- C = 2 points unweighted / 3 points weighted
- D = 1 point unweighted / 1 point weighted
- F = 0 points unweighted / o points weighted
Athletics & Activities
Co-curricular activities, like clubs and competitive organizations, play an integral role in the climate of Smoky Hill. When students are involved in a co-curricular activity, they develop stronger and more positive connections to the school, the adults and their peers. There are approximately 28 athletic programs and 55 activities.
